Chapter 6 - The Forensic Accountant Steps Up

Bright and early Monday morning, I stepped into the federal building in downtown Chicago, carrying two black leather briefcases containing three hundred pages of forensic documentation.

Sitting across from me in a glass-walled conference room were Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian) and two senior investigators from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.

Agent Miller, a veteran investigator with sharp gray eyes, flipped through the color-coded spreadsheets I had prepared.

"Mrs. Vance," Agent Miller said, looking up over his reading glasses with an expression of genuine professional admiration. "This is... incredible. Most corporate fraud teams take six months to assemble an audit trail this clean."

"I spent twelve years auditing offshore entities for Deloitte before I took a sabbatical to raise my daughter, Agent Miller," I replied evenly. "I know how guys like Julian operate. They think hiding behind three layers of LLCs makes them invisible. They forget that every digital transaction leaves a thumbprint."

AUSA Marcus Vance nodded, tapping his pen against his pad. "Your husband didn't just hide assets from a divorce court, Hannah. He used Apex Logistics' supply chain software to create ghost vendors—vendors that billed the company for shipping crates that never existed, routing the payments directly into his Delaware shell accounts."

"How much did he steal from Apex?" I asked.

"Preliminary estimates are roughly four point two million dollars over four years," AUSA Vance replied. "And because he co-signed several tax returns under your joint name using forged electronic signatures, we needed your full cooperation to clear you of any liability."

"You have my full cooperation," I said without hesitation. "Every password, every bank statement, every hard drive image I recovered from our home server is in those briefcases."

Agent Miller closed his file with a sharp snap. "With Brooke Sterling’s signed confession from Saturday morning and this forensic binder, we have enough to issue a federal arrest warrant by noon today."

A sense of profound, quiet relief washed over me. For months, I had carried the terrifying weight of feeling helpless, trapped in a house where my husband and his mother treated me like an incompetent ghost.

Now, standing in the marble halls of justice, my skill set—the very professional expertise Julian had dismissed as 'unimportant line-item work'—had become the weapon that dismantled his entire criminal syndicate.
