Chapter 6 - The Return from Tokyo

Friday morning arrived with a blinding glare of desert sunlight.

At 9:00 AM sharp, the private courtyard gates swung open. Two black town cars pulled up to the grand front entrance.

Albert, Lillian, Raymond, and Holden stepped out, their faces flushed with the triumphant adrenaline of men and women who believed they had successfully conquered the world. They strode up the stone steps, laughing loudly, clutching briefcases filled with executed legal documents, stock transfer certificates, and banking mandates from Tokyo.

“Well, well,” Albert announced loudly as he pushed open the front doors, tossing his designer coat onto the foyer couch. “The deed is done. Paxton’s digital signature was executed flawlessly across all primary corporate ledgers. The refrigeration empire, the land grants, and the primary accounts are now fully consolidated under the family holding trust.”

Lillian smiled sharply, smoothing down her silk skirt as she walked into the living room. “And how is our dear Nicole holding up? Did she survive the night, or did poor Kelly have to manage another... unfortunate medical crisis?”

They stepped around the corner into the grand living room, expecting to find a mourning widow, a silent hospital bed, and a frightened nurse.

Instead, they stopped dead in their tracks.

The hospital bed was completely empty, stripped down to bare mattresses.

Sitting in the center armchair, sipping a cup of freshly brewed black coffee, was Paxton Hunter. He looked pale, but his posture was upright, strong, and unyielding.

Standing beside him was Marcus Vance, flanked by four armed federal marshals in tactical gear. Near the doorway, trembling and handcuffed, sat Kelly, flanked by two local police detectives.

The silence that filled the grand living room was so absolute you could hear the desert wind whistling against the glass panes outside.

Albert’s face turned from triumphant flushed to a sickly, mottled gray. His jaw dropped open, but no words came out.

Lillian staggered backward, clutching Raymond’s arm for support. “Paxton...? How... how are you...?”

May you like

Paxton set his coffee cup down on the table with a sharp, deliberate clink. He stood up, towering over his family, his eyes burning with a cold, unforgiving fire.

“Surprised to see me walking, Mother?” Paxton’s voice rang out, steady and powerful. “Or were you too busy celebrating the theft of my company to check if the poison was actually working?”
