Chapter 4 - The Trap is Sprung

At precisely 2:15 PM, the heavy double doors of Abigail’s private hospital room swung open with theatrical dramatic flair.
Margaret Lawson marched in first, her face twisted into a mask of righteous indignation, wearing her Sunday church pearls as if she were attending a funeral. Behind her strode Walter, looking uneasy and keeping his eyes glued to the linoleum floor. Bringing up the rear was Derek, his hair slicked back, wearing his best corporate suit to project the image of a distraught, hardworking husband wronged by a hysterical wife.
"Abigail!" Derek cried out, throwing his hands up in faux despair as he rushed toward the bed. "Thank God! The police told us you were found wandering on the highway! What were you thinking running away in the middle of the night with a broken leg? Do you have any idea how worried sick your mother and I have been?"
He reached out to grab her shoulders, his face contorted into a masterpiece of manipulative concern.
Abigail didn't flinch. She simply pressed a small button on the side of her bed, raising the motorized backrest so she sat upright, towering over him despite the cast on her leg. She didn't say a word. She just stared at him with an eerie, unblinking calm that made Derek’s hand freeze mid-air.
Margaret stepped up beside her son, crossing her arms and sneering down her nose at the hospital sheets.
"Don't look at us like that, ungrateful girl," Margaret spat, her voice dripping with venom. "After everything my son has done for you—housing you, feeding you, putting up with your miserable moods—you pull a stunt like this? Running to the police like a common criminal? The doctor told us your leg is fractured in two places. That's what happens when you don't listen to your elders! It's God's punishment for your rebellious mouth!"
Walter shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot, clearing his throat. "Now, Margaret, maybe we shouldn't—"
"Quiet, Walter!" Margaret snapped, turning on her husband. "She needs to learn her place! If we don't break her spirit now, she'll ruin Derek's career forever!"
Derek let out a heavy, exaggerated sigh, playing the role of the long-suffering martyr to absolute perfection. He shook his head, looking down at Abigail with a mixture of pity and condescension.
"You see, Abigail?" Derek said softly, leaning in close so only she could hear the threat beneath his words. "Nobody believes you. To the local police, you're just an unstable wife who fell down the stairs and had a mental breakdown. Drop this foolishness, sign the discharge papers, and come home. If you behave yourself, maybe I won't press charges for desertion."
The room fell into a suffocating silence.
Abigail slowly reached under the heavy white blanket. She didn't look flustered. She didn't cry. Instead, she picked up her new smartphone, tapped the screen twice, and hit the play button on an audio file.
“Leave her there. The broken leg will be her punishment for not knowing how to obey.”
Derek’s voice echoed clearly through the small hospital room, crisp and unmistakable, recorded directly by the smart-home security hub in their kitchen that Abigail had covertly synced to her cloud storage months ago.
The color drained from Derek’s face so fast he looked like a corpse.
The audio continued, playing out loud for everyone in the room to hear:
“We'll deal with it tomorrow. Today you're going to learn.” “She isn't going to di:e. Tomorrow we'll say she fell. Then she'll quit her job and stay here. That way, we can finally control her.”
Margaret’s jaw dropped open. Her hands flew to her pearls. "Where... where did you get that?!" she shrieked.
Before Derek could lunge forward to grab the phone, the door to the hospital room swung wide open again.

Three uniformed state troopers, led by Detective Vance and a federal prosecutor holding a thick sheaf of legal warrants, stepped smoothly into the room, blocking every exit.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Lawson," Detective Vance said, her voice ringing with icy authority as she pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "I'm arresting you for aggravated domestic battery, false imprisonment, electronic surveillance violation, and grand larceny of federal assets. You have the right to remain silent."
