Chapter 5 - The Glass House Crumbles

The sound of the steel cuffs clicking around Derek’s wrists echoed like a gunshot in the sterile hospital room.
"This is a mistake! You can't do this!" Derek roared, his face flushing a furious, mottled purple as he thrashed against the state trooper who had pinned his arms behind his back. "I'm a respectable businessman! My wife is mentally unstable! She edited that audio! It's AI-generated!"
"Save your defense for the federal magistrate, Mr. Lawson," the prosecutor said smoothly, flashing a badge and stepping forward to hand Derek a formal indictment notice. "Cyber forensics experts verified the raw audio file metadata within twenty minutes of your wife’s extraction last night. Furthermore, your bank records show direct transfers from Mrs. Vance’s inheritance account into your personal crypto-wallets. That’s wire fraud and embezzlement across state lines."
Margaret let out a piercing shriek and lunged toward the state troopers.
"Let go of my son! You can't arrest him! She provoked him! She's a filthy, ungrateful liar!" Margaret screamed, clawing at the sleeve of the nearest officer.
"Ma'am, step back immediately or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice and accessory to aggravated battery," Detective Vance warned, her hand resting firmly on her holstered weapon.
Walter grabbed his wife’s arm, his face pale and sweating profusely. "Margaret, stop it! Just stop it! Look around you—we're finished!"
Derek glared at Abigail with a look of pure, unadulterated venom as the troopers forced him toward the doorway.
"You think you've won, Abigail?!" Derek snarled, spitting the words across the room as the door began to close. "You'll never survive without me! You have no money, no career, no life! You'll crawl back begging for my forgiveness by the end of the month!"
The heavy double doors clicked shut, cutting off his frantic shouting.
Silence descended on the hospital room.
Abigail exhaled a long, shuddering breath. For three years, she had lived under the thumb of that man, convinced that she was weak, dependent, and trapped. But looking down at her hands—steady, unbroken, and holding the keys to her own freedom—she realized that the cage had only ever existed in her mind.

Her father rushed over, gently wrapping his arms around her shoulders and burying his face in her hair. "It's over, honey. They can never hurt you again."
"No, Dad," Abigail whispered, a fierce, unbreakable light burning in her eyes. "It's only just beginning."
