Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the sun beat down warmly on the campus of the University of Cincinnati data science research laboratory.

The heavy orthopedic boot was long gone, replaced by comfortable sneakers. Abigail walked briskly down the sunlit brick walkway, holding a stack of research papers in her arms. Her old data analytics firm had welcomed her back with open arms, and she had recently been promoted to lead senior systems architect, heading up predictive modeling for humanitarian logistics.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket.

She pulled it out, expecting a work email from her department head. Instead, it was a notification from the federal restitution fund: a direct wire transfer notification clearing the final liquidation of the Lawson properties, depositing every single dollar of her recovered inheritance back into her independent account.

Abigail stopped beneath the shade of a massive oak tree, smiling to herself as she tapped the screen to clear the notification.

She looked up at the bright blue autumn sky, breathing in the crisp, clean air. They had tried to break her bones, crush her spirit, and erase her identity. They had left her for dead on a cold kitchen floor, believing she would never crawl out of the dark.

Instead, she had built an empire out of the ruins.

Abigail turned and walked forward into the sunlight, her head held high, ready for whatever chapter came next.
