Chapter 6 - The Secret Contract

A shaky, nervous breath came through the receiver.

"Mrs. Sterling... Jade... please don't hang up," Brenda Vance’s voice trembled over the phone line. She sounded exhausted, desperate, and terrified. "I... I saw the news online. I saw that Carol was arrested for child abuse and Thomas was taken in for questioning."

"I don't have time for small talk, Brenda," I said coldly, sitting back down at my desk. "You've been accepting stolen corporate funds from my company for three years. That makes you an accessory to grand larceny."

"I didn't know the money was stolen!" Brenda cried out. "I swear to God, I didn't know! Thomas told me it was his personal share of profits from a venture capital fund you two owned together! He told me you knew all about Jackson and that you agreed to pay for his upbringing as long as we stayed out of Asheville!"

I paused, absorbing the sheer scale of Thomas’s deception. He had lied to both of us. He built a fortress of falsehoods, telling his mistress I was a cold, career-obsessed woman who sanctioned his illegitimate child from afar, while telling me Brenda was dead.

"Why did you let Carol take Jackson to my house?" I asked, my voice dangerously sharp.

Brenda let out a bitter, weeping laugh. "Because Carol forced me! Six months ago, Carol came to my home in Cleveland and told me that if I didn't let Jackson live in North Carolina, she would make Thomas cut off my monthly housing payments! Carol wanted Jackson close so she could groom him to take over Thomas's 'inheritance.' She hated you, Jade. She hated that a woman held the money in that house!"

"And what about Carol hitting my daughter?"

"Carol is a abusive nightmare!" Brenda shouted through the phone. "She used to hit me when Thomas and I were teenagers! She’s obsessed with male heirs! She told me for years that daughters are worthless trash, that only boys carry the family bloodline! When I heard she hit your baby girl... I was sick to my stomach. Jade, please... I don't want to go to jail. I have evidence. I have every email, text message, and contract Thomas ever signed with me!"

My legal mind immediately recognized the immense value of Brenda’s statement.

"Send every document, contract, and text record to my corporate legal team within the hour," I commanded. "If your evidence proves you were an unwitting recipient and shows Thomas orchestrated the embezzlement, my lawyers might refrain from naming you in the civil recovery lawsuit."

"I will! I’ll send everything right now!" Brenda sobbed. "And Jade... get that boy away from Carol. She’s poisoning his mind just like she poisoned Thomas."

I hung up the phone and looked at Sarah, who was waiting at the door.

"Get our family law attorney, Arthur Pendelton, on the line," I said. "We're filing for sole custody of Zoey, a permanent restraining order against Carol and Thomas, and an immediate freeze on all joint property."

Thirty minutes later, the documents from Brenda arrived in my inbox.

As I scrolled through the scanned pages, a horrific picture began to take shape.

It wasn't just a matter of Thomas sending money to an ex-lover.

Four years ago—right around the time I became pregnant with Zoey—Thomas and Carol had executed a secret legal trust behind my back. The agreement, drafted by a crooked small-town lawyer in Ohio, stipulated that if Thomas ever divorced me, Carol would receive 40% of his marital settlement, which would then be funneled into a private trust fund exclusively for Jackson.

They had been planning to bleed me dry from the moment I got pregnant with a girl.

Carol's disdain for Zoey wasn't just old-fashioned sexism; it was financial malice. They viewed my daughter as a biological threat to Jackson’s "sole heir" status.

My blood boiled, but my mind remained razor-sharp.

I printed the documents, placed them into my briefcase, and drove directly to the Buncombe County Detention Center.

It was time to pay my mother-in-law a visit in her new home.
