Chapter 9 - The Unconditional Surrender

The settlement room downstairs was sterile and small.
Thomas sat at the center of the wooden table, flanked by a young, overworked public defender. Thomas looked unrecognizable. He had lost weight in just three days; his face was gaunt, his eyes hollow with dark circles, and his hands were trembling as he gripped a paper cup of water.
When I entered the room with Arthur, Thomas looked up, his eyes filling with a mixture of terror and desperate remorse.
"Jade..." he rasped, his voice weak.
"Mr. Swift," Arthur spoke sharply, cutting him off before he could launch into a plea. "We have ten minutes. State your offer."
The public defender pushed a document across the table. "My client is willing to sign a full, uncontested divorce decree today. He waives all claims to marital assets, all rights to Sterling Cosmetics, all claims to the Crestview Manor estate, and agrees to surrender all parental rights to Zoey Swift."
I looked at Thomas. "Surrender parental rights?"
Thomas swallowed hard, tears overflowing his eyes. "I... I know I failed her, Jade. I failed you. I can't pay the lawyers. I can't pay the bail. If you push the felony embezzlement charges, I’m looking at ten to fifteen years in state prison."
He slid his chair closer, reaching his hands across the table in a desperate gesture of surrender.
"Please, Jade... drop the criminal embezzlement charges against me. I'll sign everything. I'll walk away with just the clothes on my back. I'll never contact you or Zoey ever again. I'll take my mother back to Ohio the second she finishes her sentence."
I looked at the document on the table. The complete, absolute surrender of the man who had tried to leech off my life’s work while neglecting our child.
"I won't drop the charges, Thomas," I said, my voice steady as steel.
Thomas gasped, his face draining of what little color was left. "Jade! Please! I’m begging you!"
"However," I continued, "I will allow the prosecutor to offer you a plea deal: five years of probation, mandatory restitution of seven hundred thousand dollars through wage garnishment for the rest of your life, and immediate vacation of my premises."
Thomas stared at me, realizing this was the absolute best mercy he would ever receive from the woman he had betrayed.
"And your mother?" Thomas whispered trembling. "What about Carol?"
"Carol faces trial for felony child abuse," I said without an ounce of hesitation. "She struck a two-year-old child until she bled. She will stand before a judge and jury, and she will accept whatever sentence the law demands."
Thomas bowed his head onto the wooden table, weeping uncontrollably.
He picked up the pen with shaking fingers and signed every page of the divorce decree, stripping himself of his home, his marriage, his daughter, and his dignity.
I watched him sign the final page, took the document from his hands, and stood up.

"Goodbye, Thomas," I said softly.
He didn't look up. He just sat there, sobbing into his hands as the door clicked shut behind me.
