Chapter 8 - The Media Storm

By Wednesday morning, the story had officially exploded.

A local investigative tabloid picked up the arrest records from the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department. The headline read: "COSMETICS TYCOON’S MOTHER-IN-LAW ARRESTED FOR CHILD BATTERY; HUSBAND DETAINED IN $700K EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL."

Social media erupted. Photos of my company’s products were trending alongside posts expressing outrage over the assault on a two-year-old child.

My PR team was in hyper-drive. We issued a swift, unyielding official statement:

"Sterling Cosmetics announces the immediate termination of Thomas Swift from all executive roles. Mrs. Jade Sterling has initiated formal divorce proceedings and is fully cooperating with law enforcement in the criminal prosecution of Carol Swift for felony child abuse. Sterling Cosmetics remains dedicated to protecting families, women, and children."

Public sympathy swung violently in my favor. Sales of Sterling Cosmetics products surged by 40% in forty-eight hours as women across the country rallied behind a mother who stood her ground against domestic abuse and family betrayal.

Meanwhile, Thomas’s world was crumbling into ash.

Unable to make his five-hundred-thousand-dollar embezzlement bail because all his accounts were frozen by court order, he was forced to remain in county lockup alongside his mother.

At 2:00 PM, I met with my family law attorney, Arthur Pendelton, in his top-floor office overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.

"Jade, we have total leverage," Arthur said, laying out a thick stack of court filings. "The judge signed the temporary emergency custody order this morning. Thomas has zero visitation rights with Zoey until he completes a psychological evaluation and criminal proceedings are resolved. The restraining order against Carol is permanent—she cannot come within 1,000 feet of you or your daughter for the rest of her life."

"What about the house and assets?" I asked.

"The prenuptial agreement is airtight," Arthur replied with a satisfied smile. "Thomas’s legal team tried to argue for spousal support, but the judge threw it out immediately under the infidelity and financial fraud exceptions. Not only does he get nothing, but the court has placed a lien on his personal property to satisfy the seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars he stole from your corporate reserves."

"And Jackson?" I asked softly.

Arthur sighed, his tone softening. "Brenda flew in from Ohio yesterday to pick him up. She signed an affidavit confirming she received the embezzled funds without knowledge of their origin and has agreed to return the remaining balance in her account—about eighty thousand dollars—in exchange for immunity from civil prosecution."

I looked out the window. Jackson was an innocent victim in this web of greed, weaponized by a bitter old woman and a spineless father. I was glad he was away from Carol's toxic influence.

Suddenly, Arthur’s desk phone rang. He answered, listened for a moment, and his eyebrows raised in surprise.

"Jade... Thomas’s public defender is requesting an emergency meeting in the conference room downstairs," Arthur said. "Thomas wants to sign the unconditional surrender of all claims if you agree to drop the corporate embezzlement charges."

I stood up, adjusting my jacket. "Let's go look him in the eyes one last time."
