Chapter 3 - The Gaslight Games

The news didn't break with a bang; it began as a whisper, a subtle erosion of character. By the morning after the confrontation, Jane began receiving strange, unsolicited calls. A journalist from a local lifestyle magazine called to ask, with faux-concern, about her "erratic behavior" at the funeral. A lawyer representing an estate firm Jane had never heard of sent a formal notice questioning her mental competence to handle Samuel’s insurance settlement.

They were gaslighting her, attempting to construct a narrative where the grieving widow had snapped under the pressure of her loss, becoming a delusional, vindictive woman who was terrorizing her own parents.

Evelyn was the mastermind. She had spent a lifetime curating an image of the perfect, charitable socialite, and she knew exactly which levers to pull. She leaked photos of Jane—candid shots taken from a distance—looking disheveled, hollow-eyed, and exhausted. Under the guise of "family concern," they told everyone who would listen that Jane was suffering from a breakdown and that they were simply trying to "protect her" from herself.

Jane felt the walls closing in. Her inbox was filled with messages from mutual acquaintances asking if she needed "help." It was a suffocating, patronizing pity that smelled of betrayal. But they had underestimated her. They had treated her as the weak, soft-hearted daughter for years; they hadn't realized that the grief had burned away the last of her patience.

Jane sat in her darkened living room, the glow of her dual monitors illuminating her tired face. She wasn't just defending herself; she was building a digital dossier. She tapped into the cloud storage she had setup. She had been recording every call, tracking the IP addresses of the "anonymized" smear campaigns, and mapping the financial trail of the PR firm Evelyn had hired.

When a deputy sheriff arrived at her door to serve papers regarding a temporary guardianship over her finances, Jane didn’t cry. She didn't beg. She opened the door, invited him in, and handed him a folder—not the one she showed her parents, but a secondary, more localized file containing evidence of the harassment.

"Officer," she said, her voice steady. "I have proof that my parents are engaging in a coordinated campaign of defamation and financial coercion, stemming from their attempt to cover up a vehicular homicide. I believe this falls under witness tampering and harassment."

The officer’s demeanor shifted from dismissive to alert. Jane knew that in this town, optics were everything. By the time the officer left, it was the parents who were under investigation, not the widow. The gaslighting had backfired, pulling the curtain back on the parents’ true, desperate nature.
