Chapter 4 - The Brother’s Defection

The cracks in the family monolith grew wider when Marcus appeared at her door, but this time, he was alone, disheveled, and trembling. He looked nothing like the smug brother who had leaned against the SUV days earlier.

"They're going to burn me, Jane," he whispered, pushing his way past her. "They’ve already started moving my assets into offshore accounts to frame me for the embezzlement. They’re positioning me as the 'rogue son' who made the bad choices."

Jane sat across from him, her posture rigid. "Why should I care, Marcus? You knew. You watched them. You stood on that beach."

Marcus looked down at his hands. "I didn't order the hit, Jane. I swear. I was an idiot—I spent money that wasn't mine, and Dad held it over me. But when I found out they had tampered with the car... I couldn't breathe. I’ve been living in a nightmare since that phone call."

He slid a small, silver thumb drive across the table. "This is everything. The real ledgers. The names of the mechanics. The emails where they discussed the insurance payout amounts before the accident even happened. I’m giving you everything I have. I just want out."

Jane held the drive. It was small, light, and potentially lethal to her family’s entire legacy. She looked at Marcus, really looked at him, and saw the cowardice that had always defined him. He wasn't repentant; he was afraid. But fear was a useful tool.

"You're going to testify," Jane said coldly. "And you're going to turn on them in the public record. If you do this, I will ensure the D.A. sees you as a coerced party rather than a co-conspirator. You’ll lose your trust fund, your status, and your place in this family. But you’ll keep your life."

Marcus nodded frantically. "Whatever you say. Just don't let them destroy me."

May you like

"They destroyed me when they killed my husband and daughter," Jane said, her voice a razor. "You’re just collateral damage, Marcus. Stay here. If they come for you, we have a way to make them regret it."

For the first time, Jane realized she wasn't just seeking justice—she was orchestrating a complete annihilation of the world that had allowed such cruelty to fester.
