Chapter 5 - The Financial Guillotine

The final strike began with the click of a button. Jane watched the screen as she initiated the transfer of the evidence to the District Attorney’s office, the major news outlets, and the primary investors in her father’s firm.
She didn't wait for the wheels of justice to turn slowly. She initiated a financial guillotine. She used the documents Marcus had provided to expose the firm’s insolvency. Within hours, the stock price of her father’s company plummeted. News alerts began popping up on her phone: Investigation Launched into Global Ventures Holdings, Assets Frozen Pending Criminal Probe.
Evelyn called, her voice unhinged, screaming into the phone. "You have no idea what you've done! You’ve ruined us! We are standing in the middle of a gala and the doors are locked. The police are here!"
"That's funny," Jane replied, staring out at the gray, bruised sky that had haunted her since the funeral. "The doors were locked for me, too, Mother. I spent my days locked in grief while you sipped cocktails. How does the cold feel now that you’re on the outside?"
The social ruin was swift. Photos of the arrest, with her parents being escorted out in handcuffs, flooded the social media feeds of the very people who had looked down on Jane. She watched the news coverage, the pundits dissecting her parents' greed and the chilling, calculated nature of the accident.

Jane felt a strange, hollow sensation. The victory was absolute, yet the house remained silent. She had the justice she demanded, but the rain boots still sat by the door, and the coffee mug remained exactly where Samuel had left it. She had torn down her enemies, but she hadn't yet found a way to build a life out of the rubble.
She stood up, walked to the front door, and finally picked up Penelope’s little yellow rain boots. She didn't put them away in a closet. She placed them on the mantle, a permanent memorial, and realized that she was no longer a victim. She was the one who controlled the narrative. And the next chapter would be about something she hadn't dared to feel in months: moving forward.
