Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

By 4:00 AM, the rain outside the Sterling Medical Tower had turned into a torrential downpour, sheets of water slamming against the reinforced glass windows.

I sat in the corner armchair of Clara’s suite, an unlit cigar held between my fingers, watching the heart monitor’s steady green line pulse across the screen.

A soft groan echoed from the bed.

I was beside her in less than a second.

Clara’s eyelids fluttered open, heavy and swollen. She blinked against the dim ambient lighting of the room, her dark eyes confused, filled with terror, searching the shadows until they locked onto mine.

“Damon…?” she whispered, her voice raspy and barely audible through her dry lips.

“I’m here, baby,” I whispered back, leaning over to press my cheek against hers, feeling the warmth of her breath. “You’re safe. Nobody can touch you here.”

Tears instantly welled in her eyes, spilling over her bruised cheeks. Her hand moved weakly beneath the blanket, reaching toward her lower abdomen.

“The… the baby…” she choked out, a ragged sob tearing through her throat. “Damon… our baby…”

I felt a sharp, agonizing blade twist inside my chest, but I kept my posture steady, my face calm. She needed me to be her anchor right now, not a broken man.

I took her trembling hand and held it against my chest, right over my pounding heart.

“I know, Clara,” I said softly, my voice tight with restrained grief. “I know.”

She pulled her hand away, burying her face in her hands as silent, violent sobs wracked her fragile body. “My father… my brothers… they came to the house when you were at the conference in Chicago. They wanted me to sign the papers… I told them no. I told them that money belonged to my mother’s foundation…”

She shook her head, reliving the nightmare.

“Marcus grabbed my hair,” she gasped through her tears. “Mason held my arms behind my back… My father had the papers on the table. He said… he said if I didn’t sign, he would make sure I never walked again. When I kicked the table over, Caleb… Caleb hit me in the stomach…”

Caleb. The fifth brother. The one who had stood in the hospital hallway wearing a leather jacket, smirking while my wife lay unconscious in the ICU.

I squeezed my eyes shut for three seconds, taking a deep, slow breath to keep the roaring beast inside me from breaking loose in front of her.

“They laughed, Damon,” Clara whispered, looking up at me with eyes full of absolute devastation. “They left me on the floor of the hallway… my father looked down at me and said you were too soft to ever avenge me. He said you were just a soft, rich boy who played with numbers.”

I gently cupped her bruised cheek with my hand, wiping away her tears with my thumb.

“Clara,” I said, looking deep into her soul. “Look at me.”

She looked up, meeting my gaze.

“For three years,” I said softly, “I kept you away from my world. I never brought my work home. I never let you see the men who bow to me, the blood on my hands, or the empire I command. I wanted to give you a normal, peaceful life because you deserved light after living in your family’s darkness.”

Clara stared at me, sensing the shift in the air, sensing the terrifying aura radiating from the man she thought she knew completely.

“Who are you, Damon?” she whispered.

“I am the man who rules this city, Clara,” I replied, my voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying truth. “And before the sun sets tomorrow, every single man who touched you will beg you for the death they denied our child.”
