Chapter 9 - The Trial in the Dark

The transfer of Hector Ross, his eight sons, and Victor Vane was executed in absolute secrecy under the cover of storm-heavy darkness.

By midnight, three unmarked federal transport planes lifted off from a private airfield in New Jersey, carrying the ten men toward their permanent isolation in the mountains of Colorado. Their names were erased from public record, their assets dissolved, and their legacies reduced to ashes.

The city’s underworld received the message loud and clear.

Within forty-eight hours of the hospital incident, every major syndicate boss, gang leader, and corrupt official in the region sent formal letters of tribute and total submission to the Sterling Estate. The territory was quieter, safer, and more tightly controlled than it had been in fifty years.

Three weeks later.

The afternoon sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting a warm golden light over the private gardens of the Sterling Estate in Greenwich.

Clara stood near the marble fountain in the center of the garden, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies. Her physical injuries had healed—the bruises vanished from her skin, her fractured ribs fully mended under the care of the country’s top physicians.

I walked out onto the stone terrace, wearing a casual black sweater and trousers, holding two cups of warm herbal tea.

I walked over to her, setting the cups down on the marble edge of the fountain, and wrapped my arms around her waist from behind, resting my chin gently on her shoulder.

Clara leaned back against my chest, taking a deep, peaceful breath of the crisp autumn air.

“They’re gone, aren’t they?” she whispered softly, her fingers gently touching my arms wrapped around her.

“They will never see the light of day again, Clara,” I promised her gently. “They are buried deeper than the roots of these trees.”

She turned in my arms, looking up into my eyes. The pain of losing our child was still there—a quiet scar that would remain with both of us for the rest of our lives—but the fear, the terror, and the shadows of her past were completely gone.

“Thank you, Damon,” she murmured, resting her hands against my chest. “For protecting me. For giving me justice.”

I cupped her face in my hands, kissing her soft lips with deep, unyielding devotion.

“I promised you a life free from darkness, Clara,” I whispered against her lips. “I failed to protect you once. I will never fail you again.”
