Chapter 5 - The Arraignment

Three days later, the courtroom in the county courthouse was packed to capacity.

The benches were filled with townspeople, gossips, farmers, and local business owners—all rubbernecking to catch a glimpse of the scandal that had completely paralyzed Maple Creek.

I sat in the front row, wearing my crispest dark blazer, my posture ramrod straight. My phone rested in my lap, connected directly to the hospital room where Meadow was currently playing with a nurse on a secure video link.

Through the side doors, Dennis was led in by two bailiffs.

He wasn't wearing his flannel shirt or his work boots. He wore an orange county jumpsuit, his wrists chained to a heavy leather belt around his waist. His hair was uncombed, and the cocky, untouchable swagger he usually carried had been replaced by a hunted, hollow expression.

His defense attorney, a slick high-priced lawyer from Omaha named Sterling, immediately began whispering into Dennis’s ear at the defense table.

Across the aisle, Serena sat in the second row, heavily veiled behind oversized sunglasses, flanked by her weeping mother who still couldn't fathom that her golden-child daughter had blown up two families in one afternoon.

The judge banged his gavel.

“All rise for the Honorable Judge Henderson.”

We stood.

“Calling case number 24-CR-889, State of Nebraska versus Dennis Michael Hawthorne,” Judge Henderson announced, adjusting his spectacles and scanning the charging documents. “Charges include felony child abuse, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and tampering with a witness.”

Mr. Sterling stood up, smoothing his expensive silk tie. “Your Honor, enter a plea of not guilty on all counts. Furthermore, we move for release on a modest own-recognizance bond, given my client’s deep roots and clean record in this community—”

“Hold on, Counselor,” Judge Henderson interrupted, his voice cutting through the courtroom like a buzzsaw. He looked down from the bench, his eyes fixing squarely on Dennis. “Clean record? Mr. Hawthorne is currently facing felony charges for throwing a seven-year-old child down a flight of stairs to cover up an adulterous liaison with his sister-in-law. Furthermore, the state has submitted high-definition video evidence recovered from the defendant’s own home security system that captures the entire incident.”

Mr. Sterling’s mouth twitched. He hadn't seen the video yet; it had been fast-tracked directly from Officer Miller’s secure drive to the district attorney’s desk an hour before the hearing.

“Your Honor, we haven't had time to review—,” Sterling stammered.

“You’ll have plenty of time in the county jail,” Judge Henderson said flatly. “Bail is denied. The defendant will remain remanded to custody pending trial.”

A muffled gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery.

Dennis slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as the reality of his new life finally set in.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply stood up, buttoned my blazer, and walked out of the courtroom doors into the bright Nebraska sunshine.
