Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Foundation

The legal battle was only half the war.
While Dennis sat in a concrete cell awaiting trial, his construction business—Hawthorne & Sons Builders—began to unravel. Suppliers canceled contracts. Subcontractors pulled their crews. And bank auditors started sniffing around the company accounts.
Two weeks after the arrest, a forensic accountant named Vance Miller (no relation to the officer) called me into my clinic office with a thick manila folder.
“Doc Tori,” Vance said, sliding the folder across my consultation desk. “You might want to sit down for this.”
I sat down, keeping my hands resting flat on the wood. “Talk to me.”
“Dennis wasn't just cheating on you,” Vance said, shaking his head. “He was systematically looting your joint accounts and shifting equity from the veterinary clinic property into secret offshore LLCs controlled by Serena.”
My eyes narrowed. “Explain.”
“Over the last three years, Dennis forged your signature on three separate commercial property loans using the clinic as collateral,” Vance explained, pointing to detailed bank statements and highlighted wire transfers. “He was setting up a nest egg. The plan wasn't just an affair, Tori. It was a hostile takeover. If you had tried to divorce him under normal circumstances, you would have found yourself bankrupt, homeless, and stripped of your license.”
The room went cold.
All those late nights Dennis claimed he was “bidding on commercial contracts in Grand Island”? All those weekend trips out of town to “inspect lumber yards”?
It was all a front for financial sabotage.
He hadn't just betrayed me as a husband; he had engineered a plan to rob me of everything I had built with my own hands before I even met him.
“Can we prove this in court?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.
Vance tapped the folder. “Every single transaction, IP address, and forged signature. Serena’s signature is on the receiving end of nearly two hundred thousand dollars in diverted funds. She’s just as culpable as he is.”

I closed the folder, slid it back into my briefcase, and locked it.
“File it with the district attorney’s office immediately,” I told him. “Add wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny to the indictment.”
