Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Shield

A year after the nightmare began, Maple Creek had settled back into its quiet rhythms, but the town had changed its mind about Doc Tori.
They didn't just see the veterinarian who stitched up their livestock anymore. They saw the woman who held the line when everything collapsed.
It was a crisp Saturday morning in late October. The clinic was closed for the weekend, and the backyard of our house was filled with the sound of autumn leaves crunching under tennis shoes.
Meadow—fully healed, running as fast as any seven-year-old could—was chasing our new golden retriever puppy across the lawn, General Pickles tucked securely under her arm like a badge of honor.
I sat on the back porch with a cup of hot coffee, watching the sunlight dance through the maple trees.
My phone buzzed on the wooden table beside me.
A text message from Officer Miller: “Just checking in, Doc. Town council is dedicating the new community youth center tomorrow. They asked if you’d cut the ribbon.”
I smiled faintly, typing back: “Tell them I’ll be there. But only if I can bring my daughter.”
“Deal,” he replied.
I set the phone down and took a sip of my coffee. The air smelled crisp, clean, and entirely free of smoke or shadows.

Inside the house, the old grandfather clock struck the hour—not marking terror at 3:00 a.m., but ticking steadily through a bright, safe afternoon.
I stood up, stepped off the porch, and walked out across the grass to join my little girl, ready for whatever tomorrow brought, standing tall as an unbroken shield.
