Chapter 9 - The Settlement and Public Ruin

Three weeks passed.

The scandal had completely consumed the city’s upper crust. The video of Chloe getting arrested in her wedding dress had accumulated over thirty million views online, turning the Vance name into a national laughingstock.

Eleanor was forced to sell her beloved country club estate at a massive loss to pay off emergency debt collectors. The high-society women who used to swarm around her now refused to take her calls or invite her to charity galas.

Chloe’s trial moved forward rapidly. Faced with damning video evidence and the testimony of her cousin Amanda, Chloe pled guilty to felony charges to avoid a lengthier prison sentence. She was sentenced to two years in a minimum-security facility and ordered to pay three hundred thousand dollars in legal fines and restitution.

Dominic’s firm filed for Chapter 7 liquidation. His home was foreclosed on, his cars seized, and he was forced to move into a tiny, two-bedroom rented apartment with his disgraced mother.

One evening, my father and I sat on the terrace of our penthouse, looking out over the illuminated city skyline.

“Their final asset liquidation was completed today,” my father remarked, taking a sip of his espresso. “Dominic Vance is officially broke. He works as a low-level consultant for a small firm out in the suburbs now.”

I placed a hand over my swollen belly, feeling a strong, reassuring kick from inside.

“Good,” I said softly. “He finally gets to experience what it feels like to start from nothing. Maybe now he’ll learn the value of people.”

“And you?” my father asked gently, looking at me. “How are you feeling?”

I smiled—a real, genuine smile for the first time in months. The weight of three years of emotional abuse, silence, and hidden pain had completely lifted from my shoulders.

“I feel free, Dad,” I replied. “I feel ready.”
