Chapter 4 - The Showdown

At two o'clock that afternoon, the heavy double doors of the surgical waiting room swung open. I stood up immediately as my mother and Daniel walked into the room.

My mother was dressed impeccably in a beige cashmere sweater and cream trousers, though her eyes were darting nervously around the room. Daniel walked beside her, hands thrust deep into the pockets of his leather jacket, wearing an expression of practiced, smirking indifference.

"Claire," my mother said, stepping forward with an exaggerated sigh of tragic exhaustion. "We brought Maya's clean clothes. The doctor said she might be discharged today if her nose is set."

"She isn't going anywhere with you," I said calmly, standing between them and the hallway that led to Maya's room.

Daniel scoffed, taking a step forward. "Listen to me, little girl. You've had your fun playing white knight, but this family matter is over. We are her legal guardians. We make her medical decisions, and we are taking her home."

"You lost that right the moment you put her head through a kitchen appliance, Daniel," I said.

My mother's face contorted in anger. "Claire, stop this insane drama! You are ruining this family! Daniel has been a father to both of you when your real father died and left us with nothing!"

"Father left Maya a $500,000 trust fund, Mother," I countered, my voice echoing off the hospital walls, drawing the attention of two nearby security guards. "Which brings me to my next point. Where is that money? Because I spent the morning looking at her accounts, and there's less than twelve hundred dollars left."

Daniel’s smug smile vanished, replaced by a sudden, dangerous stillness. "You've been prying into my business."

"I haven't even started," I replied.

I pulled a crisp set of papers from my briefcase and handed them to Daniel. He didn't take them, so I let them fall against his chest, catching them as they fluttered down.

"That is an emergency ex-parte temporary restraining order signed three hours ago by Judge Rebecca Vance of the Circuit Court," I declared. "It prohibits both of you from coming within 1,000 feet of Maya, her medical facilities, or her legal representatives. Furthermore, it suspends your financial power of attorney over her estate effective immediately."

"This is ridiculous!" my mother shrieked, her voice cracking. "I am her mother!"

"And you stood in that kitchen and watched him bleed her!" I snapped, my calm facade finally cracking into raw, furious thunder. "You covered for a monster while your daughter crawled on her hands and knees with a broken face! You aren't a mother. You are an accomplice."

Daniel took a menacing step toward me, his hand coming out of his pocket, his jaw clenched tight. "You little bitch—"

Before he could finish his sentence, two uniformed State Troopers stepped out from the alcove near the elevators, followed closely by Detective Sarah Chen.

"Daniel Vance?" Detective Chen called out, her voice loud and clear. "Step away from Ms. Sterling and place your hands behind your back."

Daniel froze. His eyes darted between the officers, the exits, and me. "On what grounds? I haven't done anything!"

"You are under arrest for felony assault on a vulnerable adult, grand larceny, and state Medicaid fraud," Detective Chen announced, stepping forward with handcuffs outstretched. "You have the right to remain silent..."

My mother let out a sharp, dramatic shriek, grabbing Daniel's arm. "You can't do this! Tell them, Daniel! Tell them she's lying!"

As the troopers forced Daniel’s arms behind his back and clicked the steel cuffs around his wrists, his eyes locked onto mine. The arrogance was gone, replaced by a cold, murderous fury.

"You think you've won, Claire?" he hissed as they turned him toward the elevator. "You don't know half of what's coming for you."

"I know enough," I said quietly as the elevator doors slid closed, cutting off his face. "I know you're going away for a long, long time."
