Chapter 5 - The Raid

By four o'clock that afternoon, storm clouds had gathered over the city once again, turning the sky a dark, bruised violet. I stood on the front lawn of my childhood home, watching three state police cruisers and an evidence van idle in the driveway.

Detective Chen held the signed search warrant in her hand as she knocked heavily on the front door.

My mother opened it, looking pale and disheveled. The cashmere sweater was gone, replaced by a housecoat, and her hands were trembling violently.

"What is the meaning of this?" she whimpered, backing away as officers stepped into the foyer. "You've already arrested my husband! What more do you want?"

"We are executing a search warrant for all financial records, electronic storage devices, and physical evidence related to the ongoing criminal investigation of Daniel Vance," Detective Chen stated formally, handing my mother a copy of the warrant.

I walked past my mother without a word, heading straight toward the kitchen.

The room had been partially cleaned. The blood on the refrigerator handle had been wiped away, but in their haste, they had missed a drop that had dried on the lower trim board. A state forensics technician immediately knelt down, lighting the area with a blue UV light and taking swabs.

"They tried to clean it," the technician remarked, looking up at me. "But they used standard household cleaner. Luminol is lighting up the entire front panel of that fridge. There was massive impact here."

I walked over to the corner where the security hub was housed inside a small pantry cupboard. Daniel had locked it with a keypad deadbolt.

"Do you have the code?" Chen asked, standing behind me.

"I don't need it," I said, stepping aside as a trooper stepped up with a crowbar. With one heavy thrust and a sharp crack of splintering wood, the cabinet door swung open.

Inside sat a digital video recorder (DVR) unit connected to six security cameras placed around the house.

The technician hooked up a portable monitor and powered up the unit. "It looks like the hard drive is set to continuous overwrite loop. Let's see what we have from last night."

My heart hammered against my ribs as the technician navigated the timestamps.

11:14 PM.

The screen flickered, showing the high-definition angle of the kitchen.

Maya was on her crutches, standing near the sink, filling a glass with water. Daniel walked into the frame. He was visibly intoxicated, swaying slightly, pointing a finger in her face. The audio wasn't crystal clear, but his raised voice was unmistakable.

Maya tried to turn away, using her left crutch to shift her weight.

Daniel grabbed her right crutch, yanking it out from under her arm. Maya stumbled, catching herself on the edge of the counter. Daniel stepped close, his face inches from hers. Maya pushed him away with her frail hands.

Then, Daniel grabbed her by the collar of her shirt, hauled her backward, and slammed her with horrific force into the front of the refrigerator.

The sound of her head striking the metal echoed through the small monitor speaker—a sickening, hollow thud.

Maya slumped toward the floor. As she fell, Daniel brought his right knee up with brutal precision, striking her squarely in the face. Blood splattered across the floor. Maya collapsed into a heap, her crutch breaking beneath her weight as she fell.

My mother walked into the frame three seconds later. She didn't check on Maya. She didn't call 911. She stepped over her bleeding daughter, handed Daniel a dish towel to wipe his hands, and picked up his glass of bourbon.

Behind me, Detective Chen let out a sharp, disgusted breath. "My God..."

I closed my eyes for three seconds, letting the cold horror wash over me, turning every last drop of shock into pure, unyielding rage.

"Save that file to three external drives," I told the technician, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "That video just secured Daniel Vance a minimum of fifteen years in state penitentiary. And it just made my mother an accessory to felony aggravated assault."
