Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When they returned to the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Daniel stood beside his counsel, his jaw set, though a faint sweat gleamed on his forehead.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" the judge asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreman, a stern-faced woman in her fifties, replied, handing a sheet of paper to the bailiff.

The judge unfolded the paper, scanned it briefly, and looked up at the defense table.

"On Count One, Aggravated Felony Assault on a Vulnerable Adult, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the foreman announced clearly.

A sharp intake of breath rippled through the gallery.

"On Count Two, Felony Child and Vulnerable Adult Endangerment... Guilty."

"On Count Three, Grand Larceny... Guilty."

"On Count Four through Seven, State Medicaid Fraud and Identity Theft... Guilty on all counts."

Daniel dropped into his chair as if he had been struck by lightning. His hands shook as his attorney gripped his shoulder, whispering empty assurances that were rendered meaningless by the sheer weight of the verdict.

Three weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place.

My mother, having accepted her plea bargain, stood before the judge first. She received a sentence of five years in state custody, with three years suspended, to be followed by extensive probation and complete forfeiture of any assets connected to Daniel's illegal operations. As she was led away in handcuffs, she looked at me and Maya one last time, weeping, but neither of us moved toward her. She had chosen her path long ago.

Then came Daniel.

The judge, a veteran jurist known for his uncompromising stance on domestic violence and elder abuse, looked down at Daniel from the bench with cold disdain.

"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice echoing through the marble hall. "You preyed upon a vulnerable woman whose care was entrusted to you. You stole her financial security, stripped her of her dignity, and subjected her to a horrific act of violence that very nearly took her life. You demonstrated no remorse, no humanity, and no accountability throughout these proceedings."

The judge leaned forward, striking his gavel with a thunderous blow.

"I sentence you to twenty-five years in the state maximum-security penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first eighteen years. Furthermore, the court orders full restitution in the amount of $350,000 to be paid directly to Maya Sterling from the total liquidation of all assets owned by Vance Development LLC."

As the guards grabbed Daniel’s arms and dragged him toward the side exit, he thrusted his body backward, looking toward the gallery, shouting wildly, "Claire! Maya! You ruined me! You hear me?! You ruined me!"

May you like

I stood up, holding Maya’s hand tightly in mine, and watched him disappear behind the heavy steel doors.

"No, Daniel," I murmured softly under my breath. "You ruined yourself."
