Chapter 6: The Shadows of the Past

At 2:00 AM, Lucas sat in the back of a nondescript, unmarked black SUV parked across the street from a weathered brick three-flat apartment building in a working-class pocket of Bridgeport, South Chicago. The streetlights flickered against the damp pavement, casting long shadows across the small front yards.
Beside him in the front seat was Sam Miller, the head of his private security and intelligence team—a former black-ops military operative who had been with Lucas for fifteen years.
"I found the files, Lucas," Sam said quietly, passing a thick, un-redacted dossier over the seat. "You were right. Five years ago, your mother didn't just intercept the private investigators you hired to find Clara. She completely bought off the agency. Every report they handed you about Clara moving to California was completely fabricated. Clara never left Chicago. She moved back into her grandmother's old apartment right here."
Lucas flipped through the pages under the dim interior light of the SUV. There were surveillance photos of Clara over the last four years—walking to a local grocery store with a heavy stroller, working double shifts at a community clinic, holding the hands of two tiny toddlers as they learned to walk in a public park.
His children had grown up in the shadow of his own skyscraper, eating cheap food and wearing secondhand clothes, while he was buying ten-million-dollar summer estates in the Hamptons for a woman who lied to him every morning.
"And the legal threats?" Lucas asked, his voice raw.
"Confirmed," Sam sighed, his face tight with anger. "Victoria Carter’s private attorney, Arthur Pendelton, met with Clara at a diner three weeks after the divorce was finalized. We recovered a digital audio recording from Pendelton's archived case files during our server bypass tonight. They told her that if she filed for paternity or told you about the pregnancy, they would file an emergency petition under a sealed judge—likely Evelyn’s father, Judge Brooks—claiming she was financially and mentally unstable. They had a falsified psychiatric evaluation ready to deploy. They told her she would lose the babies to the state system before she ever saw a courtroom."
Lucas closed the folder. The sheer, calculated cruelty of his own family was almost too much to comprehend. They had used his own wealth, his own power, as a weapon to terrorize a pregnant woman into silence, forcing her to raise his sons in poverty just to protect their precious high-society bloodline from being 'tainted' by a working-class mother.
"Where are the boys registered, Sam?" Lucas asked.
"Leo and Eli Carter—she gave them your last name on the birth certificates, Lucas, despite the threats," Sam said softly. "They are four years old. Eli has a chronic asthmatic condition. That’s why they were at the clinic tonight. Clara’s insurance through the community health center doesn't cover the advanced nebulizer treatments he needs. She was trying to get him into a clinical trial that our foundation pays for."
Lucas buried his face in his hands, a jagged sob tearing through his chest. His son was suffering from a medical condition, unable to afford treatment, while his name was carved into the gold plaque on the front of the pavilion just fifty yards away.
"What do you want to do, boss?" Sam asked, his hand resting on the steering wheel, his eyes looking up at the dark windows of Clara’s second-floor apartment. "We have the data. We can destroy Pendelton, Albright, and we have enough leverage to trigger a federal judicial misconduct investigation into Evelyn’s father."
Lucas lifted his head. The tears were gone. His gray eyes were entirely cold, clear, and lethal. The corporate titan who had built an empire by calculating forty moves ahead of his competitors had completely taken over.

"We don't just investigate them, Sam," Lucas said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet whisper. "We execute a total corporate and financial liquidation. I want my mother, my wife, and every single person who touched this conspiracy stripped of everything they own. I want them to understand exactly what it feels like to have their lives dismantled by a power they cannot fight."
He opened the SUV door and stepped out into the cold Chicago rain. "Keep the team on standby. I'm going up to see my family."
