Chapter 9: The Purge of the Board

The fallout from the morning's announcements tore through the American financial markets like an earthquake. By 1:00 PM, the board of directors of Carter Global had assembled in a state of absolute, blind panic. The company’s stock value was fluctuating wildly, and investors across the country were demanding answers about the scandal involving the CEO’s family.

Lucas stood at the podium in the main press room of the Carter Tower, staring out at a wall of hundreds of journalists, their cameras flashing in a blinding, continuous roar.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Lucas said, his voice calm, clear, and unyielding over the chaos of the room. "I am here today to announce that Carter Global is taking immediate, drastic steps to purge our executive structure of all corrupt elements. I have personally turned over twenty years of internal financial records to the federal authorities, documenting the illicit activities of the Carter Foundation."

A reporter from the Wall Street Journal stood up, shouting over the noise. "Mr. Carter! What does this mean for your leadership? Are you stepping down?"

"I am not stepping down," Lucas replied, his gray eyes locking onto the camera lens. "I am restructuring. Carter Global will be shifting fifty percent of its investment capital into a new, independent national network of free pediatric healthcare clinics and reproductive research centers. This initiative will be fully managed and directed by an independent board of medical professionals—led by my ex-wife, Clara Carter, who has spent the last five years working on the frontlines of community health in South Chicago."

The room erupted into frantic shouting as reporters scrambled to process the massive, historic shift in corporate strategy.

"And as for my personal life," Lucas continued, his voice carrying an unbendable, proud resonance that silenced the room. "I want to state publicly that five years ago, my family used a fraudulent medical diagnosis to rip my marriage apart and hide the existence of my children from me. I have spent the last five years living a lie. But today, that lie is dead. My sons, Leo and Eli Carter, are the sole, legitimate heirs to my estate and the future of this company. Anyone who attempts to challenge their legitimacy, their privacy, or their mother’s character will find themselves facing the full, unrestricted legal and financial power of Carter Global."

He stepped away from the podium, ignoring the shouting questions of the press corps, and walked out the back exit of the stage.

Sam Miller met him in the hallway, holding a coat. "Victoria and Evelyn have left the building, Lucas. They were escorted out by building security. Evelyn’s lawyers are already trying to negotiate a plea deal with the federal prosecutors regarding her father's bribery charges."

"Let them crawl, Sam," Lucas said, pulling on his coat, a profound, lightness suddenly filling his chest for the first time in five years. The golden cage had been torn down. The tomb was empty. He had used his billions not to buy another piece of property or a diamond necklace, but to execute a perfect, surgical extraction of his life from the monsters who had controlled it.

"Where to now, boss?" Sam asked, a slight, respectful smile on his face.

"Bridgeport," Lucas said, his gray eyes shining with an ancient, peaceful warmth. "My family is waiting for me."
