Chapter 8: The Financial Liquidation

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the main boardroom of Carter Global was filled with an emergency assembly of the executive trustees and key senior partners. Victoria Carter sat at the right hand of the empty chairman’s seat, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her Chanel suit immaculate, her expression one of aristocratic irritation. Evelyn sat beside her, her phone buzzing continuously with alerts from her father’s legal aides.

"Where is Lucas?" Victoria demanded, slamming her gold pen onto the table. "This emergency meeting was called three hours ago, and our legal counsels are reporting that our personal accounts have been locked under a compliance flag from the internal audit department. This is completely absurd."

The heavy double doors swung open, and Lucas walked into the room. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored corporate suit. He wore a simple black sweater and jeans, his face cold and sharp as flint. Behind him walked Sam Miller and a team of six federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice.

"What is the meaning of this, Lucas?" Evelyn stood up, her voice rising in a sharp, defensive spike as she saw the federal badges. "Why have you brought law enforcement into a private corporate session?"

Lucas walked to the head of the table but didn't sit down. He leaned his hands flat on the mahogany surface, staring directly into his wife's and mother's eyes.

"This meeting is to notify the board of a major restructuring," Lucas said, his voice completely level, carrying a terrifying, dead weight. "As of 6:00 AM this morning, I have executed a full, non-revocable clawback of all family trusts and marital asset allocations associated with Victoria Carter and Evelyn Brooks Carter."

Victoria gasped, her face turning a dangerous, bright red. "You cannot do that! Those trusts are protected by generational covenants!"

"They were protected by covenants that required the active verification of legitimate family medical baselines," Lucas countered smoothly, tapping a key on his tablet. The massive presentation screens on the wall flickered to life, displaying internal bank transfers, off-shore shell accounts, and the raw digital audio recording of Arthur Pendelton threatening Clara five years ago.

"Five years ago," Lucas continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, rhythmic precision, "Victoria Carter used funds from the Carter Family Foundation to pay Dr. Harold Albright two million dollars to fabricate a medical diagnosis of infertility. That money was moved through a shell company controlled by Judge Brooks—Evelyn’s father—to secure a fraudulent asset-protection layout during my divorce."

The boardroom turned entirely silent. The executive trustees looked at the documents on the screen, then at Victoria and Evelyn with expressions of absolute, horrified shock.

"That is a federal conspiracy involving wire fraud, tax evasion through a registered non-profit foundation, and judicial corruption," Lucas stated, his eyes locking onto Evelyn, who had suddenly collapsed back into her chair, her face completely devoid of color. "The Department of Justice has already signed federal warrants for Arthur Pendelton and Dr. Albright. They were taken into custody forty minutes ago. And they have both already flipped to protect themselves."

"Lucas... darling..." Victoria stammered, her hands trembling violently as she reached toward him across the table. "We did it for you. We did it to protect the Carter name from that... that lower-class girl. You belong with Evelyn. You belong in our world."

"Your world is gone, Mother," Lucas said, his face completely expressionless. "The compliance flags on your personal accounts aren't a mistake. I have permanently dissolved the Carter Family Foundation due to criminal asset diversion. Every asset you own—your townhouses, your bank accounts, your jewelry—was purchased with funds tied to that foundation. By noon today, the federal government will freeze everything you possess as part of a criminal asset forfeiture proceeding."

He turned his gaze to Evelyn, who was staring at her phone as a breaking news alert flashed across the screen: Federal Investigators Raiding the Office of Federal Judge Brooks in Judicial Bribery Probe.

"Your father is finished, Evelyn," Lucas said softly, the sheer pity in his voice cutting deeper than any shout. "And our prenuptial agreement contains a standard 'criminal fraud and misrepresentation' clause. You aren't leaving this marriage with a summer estate or a penthouse. You are leaving with the clothes you have on right now, and a federal subpoena."
