Chapter 4 - The Perimeter Breach

The morning sun broke over the East River, casting long golden shafts of light across the manicured lawns and towering iron gates of the Rinaldi estate.

Serena was already up, dressed in dark trousers and a simple black sweater, moving through the massive industrial kitchen to prep breakfast before the four little tornadoes woke up. The memory of Victor’s words from the night before—“Let him try”—had haunted her sleep, a dangerous, thrilling promise whispered in the dark.

She pushed the thought away. She couldn't rely on a criminal kingpin to solve her civil custody battle. That was a recipe for total disaster.

Clatter.

A sharp, metallic noise echoed from the foyer.

Serena dropped her spatula, her instincts flaring. She grabbed a heavy iron skillet from the counter—not because she thought she could take on a trained assassin, but because survival required weapons—and crept cautiously out of the kitchen toward the grand entrance hall.

The heavy oak front door was standing wide open.

A cold gust of wind swept through the foyer, carrying the scent of damp pavement and expensive cologne.

Standing in the middle of the marble floor, looking entirely unbothered by the fact that he had just breached the most heavily guarded private estate in New York, was a man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit. Slicked-back blond hair, sharp blue eyes, and a predatory smile that didn't reach his eyes.

Dante Moretti.

Serena didn't know who he was, but she recognized the archetype immediately: corporate royalty wrapped in mafia velvet.

"Well, well," Dante purred, his voice smooth and dripping with oily charm as he tossed a set of luxury car keys in his palm. "Viceroy’s security must be slipping. They let stray cats wander right into the main hall."

Serena gripped the handle of the iron skillet tighter, stepping out from behind the marble pillar. "Who are you? How did you get past the gates?"

Dante turned his head, his blue eyes sweeping over her from head to toe with an insulting, dismissive appraisal. A slow, mocking grin spread across his face. "Ah. The new nanny. I heard Victor hired some desperate civilian off the street to babysit his little monsters. Tell me, sweetheart—does he pay you hazard insurance, or are you just working off a debt?"

"I asked you a question," Serena said, her voice dropping into a steely, unyielding register. "Identify yourself, or I press this panic button." She pointed a finger at the discreet smart-panel beside the alarm console.

Dante laughed—a dry, humorless sound. "You think buttons scare me, darling? I’ve known Victor Rinaldi since we were running guns out of Brooklyn docks. I don't need an invitation to walk into his house."

"Then you shouldn't need an invitation to use the front door properly instead of scaring people," a cold, lethal voice rang out from the grand staircase.

Dante’s smile faltered.

Victor was descending the steps. He hadn't shaved yet; the dark stubble along his jawline gave him an even more dangerous, feral edge. He wore a black silk robe tied loosely at the waist, and his dark eyes were locked onto Dante with the terrifying calm of an executioner stepping up to the block.

"Dante," Victor said smoothly, stopping three steps from the bottom. "You're trespassing."

"Always a warm welcome from my favorite business partner," Dante scoffed, spreading his arms theatrically. "Relax, Vic. I came to talk. About the docks. And about your... lifestyle choices." Dante’s eyes flicked back toward Serena with a crude smirk. "Though I admit, your taste in domestic help has improved. Much easier on the eyes than the last one who jumped out a window."

Before Dante could finish his sentence, the air in the room shifted so violently it felt like a physical blow.

In a blur of motion that defied his size, Victor crossed the distance between the stairs and the foyer. Before Dante could blink, Victor’s hand shot out, grabbing him by the lapels of his expensive charcoal suit and slamming him back against the solid oak front door with a crash that rattled the stained glass windows.

"Listen to me very carefully, Dante," Victor whispered, his voice so quiet it barely carried across the room, yet every syllable dripped with lethal intent. "You ever step foot on my property without an appointment again, and you won't walk out through the front gates. You'll leave in a wooden box."

Dante’s face flushed a deep, ugly red, his breath hitching as Victor’s knuckles tightened against his throat. But beneath the panic, Dante forced a twisted, defiant smile.

"You can threaten me all you want, Victor," Dante choked out, coughing slightly. "But it doesn't change the board meeting tomorrow. The syndicate votes on the shipping routes. And if you're distracted... well, everyone knows a man with children—and a weak spot—is a man ready to fall."

Victor’s eyes narrowed into absolute slits of black ice.

He didn't answer with words. He simply shoved Dante backward so hard the other man stumbled down the front steps, barely catching his balance on the gravel driveway.

"Get off my land," Victor said, his voice echoing across the courtyard.

Dante adjusted his ruined suit jacket, shooting one last venomous glare at Victor—and a lingering, calculating look at Serena—before turning and marching briskly toward his waiting black sedan. The tires squealed as the car tore down the long driveway.

Silence descended upon the foyer once more.

Victor stood motionless for a long moment, staring out the open door, his chest heaving slightly under his silk robe.

Serena slowly lowered the iron skillet. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Who was that?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

May you like

Victor didn't look at her. He reached out, his hand trembling just slightly as he gripped the heavy wooden door and slammed it shut, turning the deadbolt with a resounding, metallic click.

"An old friend," Victor said coldly, his jaw tight. "Go back to the kitchen, Serena. Make sure my sons don't set fire to the toaster."
