Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid

The rain pelted the reinforced glass of the Rinaldi penthouse with the force of thrown gravel.

It was 2:30 AM.

Serena woke up instantly. In the two weeks she had lived in the estate, her nervous system had been rewired to detect the slightest shift in the atmosphere. She threw off the duvet, grabbed her heavy wool robe, and slipped out into the hallway.

The lights in the main corridor were off, but a pale blue emergency glow emanated from the security control station near the master suite.

She crept down the hall, her bare feet making no sound against the Persian rugs.

As she reached the top of the grand staircase, she saw them.

Three men in matte-black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind reinforced balaclavas, moving through the foyer with terrifying, military-grade precision. They carried silenced submachine guns, their boots silent against the marble floor.

Intruders.

Not a clumsy corporate spy like Dante Moretti. Real professionals. Hitmen.

Panic threatened to paralyze her, but training—or perhaps the sheer maternal instinct of survival—kicked in. She backed slowly away from the landing, intending to barricade herself in the nursery with the quadruplets, when a heavy hand clamped over her mouth from behind.

She let out a muffled shriek, swinging her elbow backward with all her might.

Her elbow connected with solid, unyielding muscle.

"Quiet," a deep, gravelly voice hissed right against her ear.

Serena went rigid. She recognized that scent instantly: sandalwood, cedar, and gunpowder.

Victor pulled her into the shadows of the arched alcove beside the library doors. He was dressed entirely in black tactical trousers and a dark combat shirt, a heavy Beretta pistol held securely in his right hand. His face was a mask of cold, unblinking focus.

"They're in the house," Serena whispered frantically against his hand, which he slowly relaxed, though he didn't let go of her arm.

"I know," Victor murmured, his dark eyes locked on the foyer below. "Dante Moretti’s cleanup crew. He thought he could send a message before the board meeting tomorrow."

"The boys—" "The boys are secure. The nursery has a reinforced steel panic room behind the bookshelf. They’re already inside it."

Serena let out a shaky breath, feeling the tension in her chest ease just a fraction. "What do we do? There are three of them. Maybe more outside."

Victor looked down at her. In the dim emergency light, his expression wasn't panicked; it was exhilarated—the face of a predator in his natural element.

"We don't do anything, Serena," Victor whispered, his thumb lightly stroking her wrist where he held her. "I do."

"You're not going down there alone against three armed men—!"

"Who said I was alone?"

A sharp, synchronized series of muffled thuds echoed from the foyer below.

Serena peeked around the edge of the stone pillar.

Through the gloom, she saw two of the tactical intruders drop instantly to the marble floor, neutralized by compressed-air tranquilizer darts fired from the overhead catwalks by Victor’s hidden security detail.

The third intruder spun around in a panic, leveling his submachine gun toward the stairs.

Before he could pull the trigger, Victor stepped out from the shadows of the alcove with terrifying speed. He didn't fire his weapon. He closed the distance in two strides, struck the intruder’s wrist with a bone-crushing blow that sent the weapon clattering across the floor, and swept the man’s legs out from under him.

The man hit the marble with a sickening thud and went completely limp.

Silence descended upon the grand foyer once more.

Victor stood over the unconscious intruder, breathing steadily, adjusting his cuffs as if he had just broken up a minor domestic dispute rather than an assassination attempt.

He looked up toward the stairs, catching Serena’s wide-eyed, breathless gaze in the dim light.

"Go back to bed, Serena," Victor called up softly. "The house is clean."
