Chapter 10 - A New Dynasty

Two days later, the heavy iron gates of the Rinaldi estate swung open to admit a modest black sedan.
Serena sat in the passenger seat, but her heart was in the back.
Lucia—seven years old, with her mother’s dark eyes and a bright, missing-tooth grin—was pressing her face against the rear window, staring up at the towering limestone mansion with wide, enchanted eyes.
"Mommy," Lucia breathed, her voice filled with awe. "Is this a castle?"
"Something like that, sweetie," Serena laughed, tears of pure joy prickling her eyes.
As the car stopped in the grand courtyard, the front doors opened.
Victor Rinaldi stepped out into the afternoon sunlight. He wore a simple black shirt and dark trousers, looking less like a mafia kingpin and more like a man stepping out to greet his own family. Behind him, peeking out from the doorway like a troop of curious bodyguards, stood Marco, Nico, Alessandro, and Tommy.
Serena stepped out of the car, walking around to open the back door.
Lucia hopped out, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit in one arm. She looked up at Victor, who towered over her by a foot, and then up at the four quadruplets, who were staring at her with the intense curiosity of young wolves inspecting a new pack member.
"Dad," Marco whispered loudly, elbowing Victor in the side. "Is she the one?"
Victor looked down at Marco, then shifted his dark, unreadable gaze to Serena, before finally looking at little Lucia.
A slow, undeniable smile touched the corners of Victor’s mouth—a real smile, warm and genuine, that chased away every shadow of the underworld.
"Yes, Marco," Victor said, his voice deep and steady as he stepped forward to extend his hand down toward Lucia. "This is Lucia. And she’s staying."
Lucia didn't hesitate. She shook Victor’s hand with solemn, childish gravity, then turned her attention to the quadruplets.
"Do you guys have video games?" she asked brightly.
Marco grinned—a dangerous, conspiratorial grin that looked entirely too much like his father’s. "The best ones. Come on, we’ll show you the panic room."
Serena watched as her daughter ran off toward the mansion, flanked by four chaotic boys who suddenly looked remarkably well-behaved.
She turned back to Victor. The sunlight caught the dark waves of his hair, and the sharp, dangerous lines of his face softened as he looked down at her.
"You won," Victor stated softly.
"I won," Serena whispered, the weight of the past two years finally lifting entirely from her shoulders. She stepped closer to him, the distance between them dissolving into nothing. "And I don't know how I'll ever repay you."
Victor reached out, his large, warm hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering against the soft skin of her cheek.
May you like
"You don't have to repay me, Serena," he murmured, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that promised forever. "Just stay."
And as she leaned into his touch, surrounded by the laughter of children echoing through the stone arches of the estate, Serena knew she had finally found her fortress.
