Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Gate

The tranquility of the canyon was shattered late Thursday night by the shrill, electronic shriek of the estate's perimeter security alarms.

Elena bolted upright in her bed in the guest suite, her heart hammering against her ribs. Before she could even throw on a robe, the door burst open. Ricardo stood there in a dark tactical turtleneck and slacks, holding a heavy Beretta pistol with casual, deadly familiarity.

"Get away from the windows," Ricardo ordered, his voice low and urgent.

"What's happening?" Elena asked, stepping out of bed.

"An intrusion attempt at the north gate," Ricardo said, his eyes scanning the hallway before focusing back on her. "Stay in this room. Do not open the door for anyone except me."

"The children—"

"I have men with the children. My primary concern right now is ensuring you are secure."

Before Elena could argue, Ricardo turned and vanished down the corridor toward the central security hub.

Unable to just sit and wait while danger lurked outside, Elena grabbed her heavy flashlight and crept toward the hallway window overlooking the front courtyard. Down below, the estate’s security floodlights blazed like miniature suns, cutting through the dense fog rolling in from the canyon.

Three armored black SUVs had rammed through the outer wrought-iron gates. Men in tactical gear were spilling out onto the gravel driveway, trading gunfire with Ricardo's private security detail. The sound of automatic weapons fire cracked through the night air, deafening and terrifying.

This wasn't a random burglary. This was an organized hit.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the service corridor near the guest rooms. Someone had breached the inner perimeter through the kitchen entrance.

Elena’s breath caught. She backed away from the window, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from the antique table beside her bed. The door handle to her room slowly turned.

The door pushed inward.

A masked figure stepped into the dim light of the room, holding a silenced submachine gun. He raised the weapon, spotting Elena frozen near the bed.

Before the intruder could pull the trigger, a dark shape dropped from the ceiling rafters behind him with lethal precision. It was Ricardo. With brutal, calculated efficiency, Ricardo slammed the intruder's head against the doorframe, disarmed him in a single fluid motion, and drove the butt of his pistol into the man's temple, sending him crashing unconscious to the floor.

Ricardo stood over the fallen merc, breathing heavily, his knuckles bleeding. He looked up, his eyes locking onto Elena.

"I told you to stay in the room," he rasped, stepping over the body to close the distance between them.

"I'm not a potted plant, Mr. Flores," Elena breathed, lowering the candlestick, her hands shaking only slightly. "I'm not going to sit in a corner while people shoot up my workplace."

Ricardo stared at her for a long, intense moment. Then, unexpectedly, a wry, humorless smile touched his lips. "No," he muttered, reaching out to gently brush a strand of hair away from her face. "You certainly aren't."
