Chapter 7 - The Threat Closes In

Two weeks of relative peace followed, during which the estate felt less like an armed compound and more like an eccentric, lively home. The children actually practiced their music; Elena laughed more than she had in years; and her quiet moments with Ricardo in the evenings blossomed into a deep, unspoken bond.

Then, the storm broke.

Elena was in downtown Los Angeles picking up specialized sheet music for Valentina when her phone buzzed with an unknown number.

She answered. "Hello?"

"Ms. Castillo," a cold, unfamiliar voice spoke through the receiver. "If you ever want to see your mother leave her hospital room alive again, you will do exactly as I say."

Elena froze in the middle of the crowded sidewalk. Her blood ran cold. "Who is this?"

"That doesn't matter. What matters is that Ricardo Flores is keeping secrets from you. He brought you into his war, and your mother is paying the price. Go to the public parking garage on 4th Street. Sector B. There is a package for you. Bring it to the canyon estate tonight."

The line went dead.

Panic seized Elena’s chest like a vise. Her mother. The lab work, the medical bills, the hospital care—all of it was funded through anonymous elite grants that she now realized were tied to Ricardo’s network. If someone had leverage over her mother, they had leverage over her.

She didn't hesitate. She drove straight to the designated parking garage.

In Sector B, tucked behind a concrete pillar, sat a plain manila envelope. Elena picked it up, her hands shaking. Inside were photographs of her mother sleeping peacefully in her hospital bed—and a secondary set of photos showing a man in a black ski mask standing right outside her window.

Pinned to the back was a small, high-explosive detonator with a digital timer.

"Smart girl," a voice echoed from the shadows of the parking structure.

Elena whipped around. Two men in dark suits stepped out from behind a concrete support column, blocking her path to the exit.

Before they could grab her, the screech of tires echoed through the garage. A sleek black Mercedes slammed to a halt directly between Elena and the two assailants. The passenger door flew open, and Ricardo’s voice roared from inside:

"Get in the car, Elena! Now!"

Elena didn't waste a second. She dived into the passenger seat, and the Mercedes bolted forward, tires smoking against the concrete as bullets began to ping off the reinforced rear panels.
