Chapter 3 - Whispers of the Lost Years

By three in the morning, the master suite of the Castillo estate looked like an intensive care unit.

Dr. Harrison, Alejandro’s personal physician, stepped out of the bedroom and closed the heavy oak doors quietly behind him. Alejandro was waiting in the hallway, an unlit cigar pinched between his fingers, his jaw tight.

"How is she?" Alejandro demanded instantly.

Dr. Harrison sighed, pulling off his spectacles and rubbing his tired eyes. "Physically, she’s severely malnourished, Alejandro. Her body shows signs of prolonged chemical sedation, heavy dehydration, and multiple healing micro-fractures in her wrists and ankles. Someone kept her restrained for months at a time."

Alejandro’s grip on the cigar tightened until the tobacco shredded in his palm. "And mentally?"

"Traumatized, but lucid," Harrison replied softly. "She’s awake. She’s asking for you. But Alejandro... be patient with her. What she went through wasn't just physical confinement. It was systematic psychological destruction."

Alejandro nodded curtly, pushed the door open, and stepped into the dim, soft light of the bedroom.

Elena was propped up against a mountain of plush silk pillows. A thin IV line ran into the back of her pale hand. When she saw Alejandro enter, her breath hitched, but she didn't hide. She patted the edge of the mattress beside her.

Alejandro walked over silently and sat down, gently taking her frail, calloused hand into his massive palms. He pressed his lips to her bruised knuckles, holding them there for a long, aching moment.

"I searched every corner of Europe, Elena," he whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of three years of guilt. "Prague, Vienna, London, Rome... I thought I lost you forever. How were you here? How did this happen?"

Elena looked down at their joined hands, a solitary tear trailing down her pale cheek.

"Three years ago... in Florence," Elena began, her voice small and trembling. "I was on my way to meet your business associates at the gallery. A car blocked the alleyway. Men in tactical gear... they used a nerve agent. I woke up in a dark room under the ground."

"Vivian?" Alejandro gritted out.

"Not just Vivian," Elena whispered, looking up at him with eyes full of haunting pain. "Vivian was the warden. But she wasn't the mastermind, Alejandro. The man who handed me over to her in Italy... the man who paid the guards to keep me sedated and moved me into the estate’s east-wing cellars six months ago..."

Alejandro felt a cold blade of ice slide into his chest. "Who, Elena?"

"Your half-brother," she whispered. "Gabriel."
