Chapter 2 - The Landing and the Interrogation

The private tarmac at Dulles International Airport gleamed under a cold, steady drizzle as the Gulfstream G650 touched down with barely a whisper. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere remained heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that not even the smooth landing could diffuse.

Jonathan Mercer sat motionless in seat 2A. In his arms, Eli had finally drifted into a deep, exhausted sleep, his small face pressed against Maya Alvarez’s shoulder. Maya sat beside Jonathan, her posture rigid, her hand gently supporting the infant’s back. For over two hours, neither of them had spoken. Jonathan had simply watched, his mind racing through calculations, security protocols, and the agonizing fragments of his late wife’s final words.

Do not let them finish it.

The cabin door hissed open, and the sharp scent of damp tarmac mixed with jet fuel drifted inside. A moment later, Owen Mercer stepped up the aisle, his expression tight and guarded. He glanced past Jonathan, his eyes fixing on Maya with undisguised hostility.

"Mr. Mercer, the transport is ready," Owen said, his voice clipped. "And the local authorities have been notified regarding the unscheduled flight path adjustments over the Atlantic. Also... we need to discuss the unauthorized passenger."

Jonathan raised his head. The exhaustion in his dark eyes was replaced instantly by the cold, unyielding authority that had built Mercer Dominion Capital into a global titan.

"She is not an unauthorized passenger, Owen. She is with us."

Owen’s jaw tightened. "Sir, protocol dictates—"

"Protocol is suspended," Jonathan interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, rich with a quiet menace that made Owen step back. "She saved my son from screaming himself into a seizure while my private medical team stood there like statues. Open the exit."

Owen swallowed hard, his eyes flickering once more toward Maya before he nodded stiffly. "Yes, Mr. Mercer. The armored convoy is waiting at the private hangar."

As they descended the metal steps into the damp D.C. night, a phalanx of black SUVs idled against the wet pavement. Security guards in tailored suits moved with practiced precision, shielding Jonathan, Maya, and the sleeping infant from the elements.

Yet, as Maya slid into the leather interior of the lead vehicle beside Jonathan, she felt a prickle of unease. The security men didn't look like standard corporate bodyguards; they moved with the lethal efficiency of private mercenaries. And Owen Mercer—despite sharing a surname and a decade of service—was watching them through the rearview mirror with a look that was far too calculating for mere professional concern.

"Where are we going?" Maya asked, her voice steady despite her racing heart.

"My estate in McLean," Jonathan replied, staring straight ahead as the SUV glided smoothly away from the airfield. "It’s secure. Private medical staff are on standby. And... we need to talk."

Maya looked down at Eli. The baby stirred slightly, his tiny fingers curling into the fabric of her coat. She had spent nine months telling herself that the grief of losing Gabriel was something she would carry to her grave. But holding this child felt like holding a phantom limb brought back to life.

"You think something is wrong with him," Maya stated quietly. "Beyond the crying."

Jonathan turned his head, his dark eyes meeting hers in the dim interior light.

"My wife died under strange circumstances in Dublin five weeks ago," Jonathan said, his voice raw. "Before she lost consciousness, she told me not to let them finish it. And tonight, for the first time in five months, my son refused every drop of formula prepared by the pediatric nurses we hired through Mercer Dominion's exclusive medical network—until you held him."

Jonathan’s gaze locked onto hers with terrifying intensity.

"Who are you, Ms. Alvarez? And why did my son stop crying the moment you touched him?"
