Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

The red emergency lights pulsed rhythmically against the dark wood paneling of the master study, casting an ominous crimson glow over the room.

"We have to move," Maya said, her maternal instincts hardening into absolute steel. She adjusted Eli securely against her chest, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around him. "Where is the secure exit?"

"The panic room," Jonathan said, walking swiftly toward the bookshelf on the far wall. He pressed a carved wooden bookend shaped like an atlas. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, a section of the oak shelving swung inward, revealing a reinforced steel staircase leading downward into the subterranean depths of the estate.

"What about Vance?" Maya asked, glancing toward the leather sofa where the doctor was still cowering.

"Leave him," Jonathan said coldly. "He’s safer locked in here than anywhere else."

Jonathan reached down, grabbing Owen’s dropped suppressor pistol from the floor and sliding it into his jacket pocket. He grabbed a secure satellite tablet from his desk—the master terminal linked to the federal authorities and his private legal team—and gestured for Maya to enter the vault.

"Go. Now."

They descended the steel staircase into a windowless, concrete-reinforced bunker equipped with emergency lighting, communication arrays, and independent air filtration. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind them, sealing automatically with an encrypted biometric lock.

On the high-definition monitor mounted on the bunker wall, exterior camera feeds showed absolute chaos.

Four unmarked tactical vehicles had breached the western perimeter gates, their headlights cutting through the heavy fog. Armed men in black tactical gear poured across the lawns, moving with ruthless coordination toward the main house.

"They're coming for the servers," Jonathan said, his fingers flying across the console keyboard. "The Genesis Project data is mirrored on local drives in the basement archive. If they wipe those drives, the entire syndicate walks."

"Can you upload the files to federal servers?" Maya asked, watching the monitor as the tactical team breached the front doors of the mansion.

"I can," Jonathan replied, his face illuminated by the blue glow of the monitors. "But it requires a dual authorization key—my biometric scan, and Rebecca’s encryption passphrase."

Maya frowned. "Where do we get Rebecca's passphrase?"

Jonathan paused. His hands hovered over the keyboard. He looked down at the leather-bound journal resting on the metal table.

"In the final entry," Jonathan murmured, flipping the pages rapidly. "She wrote it down the night before she died."

On the monitor, the camera feed from the second-floor hallway showed Owen’s tactical team blowing the locks off the master study doors. They swarmed into the room, kicking furniture aside, realizing the study was empty. One of the men spoke rapidly into a shoulder radio, pointing toward the hidden bookshelf.

"They found the panic room entrance," Maya said, her breath hitching. "Jonathan, how long do those steel doors hold?"

"Ten minutes under heavy explosives," Jonathan said grimly. "We have ten minutes to upload the files and transmit the coordinates to the FBI field office in Washington."

He found the page in Rebecca’s journal. Scrawled at the bottom margin was a string of alphanumeric characters: VERITAS-99-DUBLIN.

Jonathan punched the passphrase into the master console.

A progress bar appeared on the screen: UPLOADING ENCRYPTED ARCHIVE... 15%... 30%...

Outside the reinforced steel door of the bunker, a muffled, concussive thud echoed through the concrete walls.

They had planted the first explosive charge.
