Chapter 6 - The Hidden DNA Report

Jonathan lifted the Manila envelope from the safe with hands that barely shook. He carried it over to the desk, tearing open the wax seal while Maya stood beside him, her breath caught in her throat.
Inside were two documents: a clinical trial ledger from St. Jude’s Clinic in Dublin, and a comprehensive forensic genetic report printed just three weeks before Rebecca’s death.
Jonathan unfolded the genetic report, scanning the complex chromosomal sequences and percentage matches.
His eyes locked onto the bottom line.
Biological Father: Jonathan Mercer (99.99%) Biological Mother: Maya Alvarez (99.99%)
The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
Jonathan dropped the paper onto the desk as if it were burning his skin. He looked up at Maya, his eyes wide, swimming with a mixture of shock, awe, and overwhelming sorrow.
"You..." Jonathan whispered, his voice failing him. "You aren't just a nurse who happened to be on that flight. You are his mother."
Maya snatched the paper from the desk, her eyes scanning the data. Tears spilled over her lashes, hot and fast, tracking down her cheeks.
"They lied to me," she choked out, pressing her free hand over her mouth. "They told me he died. They buried an empty casket in Boston just to cover their tracks. They stole my son and gave him to Rebecca..."
"No," Jonathan said softly, stepping closer and placing his hands gently on her shoulders. "Rebecca didn't know. Read the journal."
He opened the leather-bound diary and pointed to a handwritten entry dated two months prior, scrawled in Rebecca’s frantic handwriting:
“I found the subsidiary financial records today. The Genesis Project isn't just clinical research—it’s an illegal infant trafficking and genetic harvesting ring operated through Owen’s offshore accounts. The baby they gave me... Eli... he isn't an orphan. He belongs to a nurse from Boston named Maya Alvarez whose child was stolen from St. Jude’s. Owen threatened me today. He said if I go to Jonathan or the authorities, they will target my family. I have to protect my husband, but I have to give this child back to his true mother.”
Maya stared at the page, the ink blurring behind her tears.
The woman who had raised her stolen baby hadn't been her enemy; she had been another victim trapped in the same web of corporate evil.
"She knew," Maya whispered. "She was trying to fix it."
"And they killed her for it," Jonathan said, his voice thick with grief and rage. He looked down at Eli, who stirred in Maya’s arms, opening his big, bright blue eyes—eyes that suddenly looked so much like Jonathan’s, yet carried the soft, expressive warmth of Maya’s smile.
"He’s ours," Jonathan said, his voice dropping to an emotional whisper. "Both of us."
Before Maya could reply, the secure comms panel on the mahogany desk chimed shrilly.
A red emergency light began flashing across the console.
A synthesized automated voice echoed through the study: Perimeter security breach. Sector Four. Multiple armed units approaching the main residence.

Jonathan’s head snapped toward the door.
"Owen had a backup team on standby," Jonathan said, his jaw tightening into iron. "They’re purging the estate."
