Chapter 3 - The Husband’s Awakening

The breaking point arrived three days later. Minh had spent the weekend trying to patch the peace, running back and forth between us, looking increasingly haggard. He tried to force me to apologize, grabbing my arm, his voice losing its usual softness.

"Just make the breakfast, An! Just for this week! Why are you doing this to us?"

I pulled away, looking at him with a coldness that shocked him. "I am doing this to us because you are letting your mother erase me. Did you not hear her? 'In this family,' she said. Not 'in our marriage.' You are part of this family, but you are not protecting your wife. You are watching me starve, and you are worried about the coffee."

That night, for the first time, I didn't just withhold labor—I withheld presence. I locked our bedroom door.

Minh spent the night on the couch, where he was subjected to his mother’s non-stop venting. He heard her complain about how "lazy" I was, how I was "ruining the family tradition." But he also heard his father complain about how terrible the food was and his sister scream about the children’s lack of routine.

At 4:00 AM, there was a knock on the door. It was Minh. He sounded different.

"An," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I went to the kitchen. I tried to make the coffee. I couldn't find the filter, I couldn't find the beans, and I realized… I have no idea how this house runs. I have been eating, and sleeping, and working, while you did everything. And my mother… she’s just yelling. She doesn't even know how to fix it."

I opened the door, but I didn't step out. "She knows how to give orders, Minh. Does she know how to lead?"

He stood there, looking at the black notebook on the nightstand, which I had placed under a heavy decorative lamp. He picked it up, looked at the rules inside, and for the first time, he laughed—a hollow, bitter sound.

"This isn't a family," he said, looking at me. "It’s a prison. And you’re the only one who realized it."
