Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The true explosion happened on the day of the annual Ancestor Remembrance, a day Mrs. Thuy lived for. It was her moment to shine, to play the martyr, and to ensure everyone bowed to her authority. She had invited the entire extended family, expecting me to be in the kitchen by 3:00 AM, exhausted and compliant.

When the relatives arrived, they found a house that looked cold. The tables were bare. The traditional incense was not lit. Mrs. Thuy, frantic and sweating, came into the room where I sat with the elders, wearing my best silk dress, sipping tea.

"Why haven't you started the cooking?" she hissed, her voice trembling with rage.

"I am a guest today, Mother," I replied, smiling at the matriarch of the clan who sat next to me. "Minh and I have decided to cater this event. We have hired professional chefs. The traditional cooking you demanded... well, I am afraid I have retired from that position."

Mrs. Thuy went pale. She had planned to humiliate me in front of the extended family by pointing out my 'incompetence.' Instead, she found herself surrounded by people who were impressed by my composure and the efficiency of the catered event.

"An has organized everything so beautifully," one of the aunts commented. "Thuy, you should be proud of your daughter-in-law."

Mrs. Thuy couldn't take it. In a fit of performative victimhood, she knocked a vase off the table, screaming, "She is ruining this family! She is destroying our ways!"

The room went deathly silent. The aunts and uncles watched as the woman who had preached 'order' for years descended into a screeching display of entitlement. It was the moment the mask fell.
