Chapter 6 - The Great Departure

The aftermath of the Ancestor Remembrance was irreparable. The family's reputation, which Mrs. Thuy had guarded so fiercely, was now tied to her public breakdown.

I gave Minh an ultimatum, not out of malice, but out of necessity. "I cannot build a life with you in a house that functions as a theater for your mother’s ego. We leave, or I leave."

Minh didn't hesitate. He had spent his life being the 'good son' to a woman who never actually loved him—she only loved the service he enabled. He looked at his mother, who was sitting in the dark, clutching her black notebook, now filled with nothing but scribbles of her own failed influence.

"Mother," Minh said, his voice quiet but firm. "I am done. An is my wife. We are moving out tomorrow."

The night before we left was surreal. Mrs. Thuy tried to block the door, she tried to bribe us with guilt, and she tried to threaten us with disinheritance. But the power had already shifted. We packed our things. I left the black notebook on the kitchen table, open to the first page.

I had crossed out the rule about eating last and replaced it with a simple phrase: The house belongs to those who contribute to it.

As we walked out the door, the silence behind us wasn't heavy anymore. It was just the silence of a house that had lost its rhythm. We didn't look back. We didn't need to. We were hungry, and for the first time in this marriage, we were going to eat exactly when we wanted to.
