Chapter 2 - The Cleanup and the Clawback

The bridal suite was a sanctuary of expensive, discarded dreams. Naomi, my maid of honor, had locked the door behind us, her eyes wide with terror and awe. "El, what did you just do?"
"I woke up," I replied, pulling my phone from my garter. I checked the recorder app. The waveform was perfect.
I didn't waste time on tears. I called Arthur Sterling, my father’s lifelong attorney. He answered on the first ring, likely expecting a call about the wedding night schedule. Instead, he heard the steely voice of a woman who had just realized her entire life was a set piece in a heist.
"Arthur, I need you at the house. Now. And bring the forensic accountants. We are initiating a full audit of every cent that has crossed into any account Adrian has touched for the last thirty-six months."

The following 48 hours were a blur of legal maneuvers. Adrian tried to call, then sent flowers, then sent his lawyer. I refused them all. My team, led by Arthur, discovered that Adrian had already moved two million dollars into an offshore shell company under the guise of 'wedding preparations.'
I didn't call the police immediately—not until we had the full map of the rot. I used the scandal to my advantage, leaking just enough to the press to ensure that his creditors began calling in their loans. I wasn't just breaking off an engagement; I was dismantling his life brick by brick. By the time he realized I wasn't going to negotiate, he was already underwater, drowning in the public humiliation I had orchestrated.
