Chapter 4 - The Predator Becomes Prey

Adrian’s world was contracting. With the scandal dominating the headlines, his credit rating had plummeted, and his luxury penthouse was under investigation by the tax authorities. He was desperate, and desperation is a dangerous—but predictable—thing.

He started playing the victim, leaking stories to the press about my "unstable" behavior, painting me as a fragile, paranoid heiress who had suffered a nervous breakdown at the altar. I let him play his hand. While he was busy trying to salvage his public image, I sent an emissary—a high-end consultant who supposedly handled "delicate, high-net-worth acquisitions"—to contact him.

"Eleanor is terrified of the public fallout," the consultant told Adrian in a dimly lit bar, a meeting I watched via a hidden camera. "She’s willing to sign over a significant portion of the estate just to make you disappear and stop the rumors."

Adrian’s greed, as I expected, overcame his caution. He couldn't resist the bait. He set a meeting for midnight at a private airfield, thinking he was about to secure his fortune and flee the country.

When he arrived, he didn't find me. He found federal investigators. They had been tracking the digital paper trail I’d been building since the day after the wedding. As they cuffed him, the look of utter confusion on his face was worth more than the forty million he’d tried to steal. He hadn't realized that while he was busy acting, I had been auditing.
