Chapter 9 - The House of Cards Collapses

The verdict took less than three hours. Guilty on all counts: conspiracy to commit fraud, embezzlement, and a litany of charges related to my father’s medical mistreatment.

As the judge read the sentencing, I watched them. Celeste was staring at the ceiling, her eyes vacant, her status, her wealth, and her dignity completely evaporated. Adrian looked like a ghost of the man I had once thought I loved. He caught my eye, and for a fleeting second, he tried to offer that old, charming smile—a pathetic, desperate instinct. I didn't flinch. I didn't cry. I simply looked away.

Outside the courthouse, the media swarm was blinding. They wanted a statement, a soundbite, a moment of triumph. I stepped up to the microphones, my reflection in the camera lenses showing a woman who had been forged in the fire of betrayal and come out tempered steel.
