Chapter 3 - The Birth of Resilience

The nights in the garage were brutal. The temperature dropped, and the thin blanket I’d stolen from the guest room was no match for the damp concrete. But every night, I worked. I had begun shorting the stocks of the parent companies Marcus relied on, using the small, overlooked account Arthur had left for me in an offshore bank. It wasn't much, but it was enough to buy information.

By the end of the month, the physical toll began to outweigh the mental momentum. My ankles were swollen, and the baby was restless, reacting to the stress hormones coursing through my veins.

Then came the storm.

It was a Tuesday evening. A massive front had moved in, rattling the garage door against its frame. I felt the first cramp—sharp, rhythmic, and undeniable.

I dragged myself to the main house. The dining room was glowing with warmth. The smell of roast lamb wafted out. I knocked on the glass door. My mother appeared, holding a glass of wine, her expression hardening when she saw me.

"I'm in labor," I said, my voice tight.

"Oh, for heaven's sake," she sighed, looking back at the table where Marcus and Clara were laughing. "Can’t you wait until after dinner? We have guests, Elena."

"I need a ride to the hospital, Mother. Now."

My father stood up, his face twisted in annoyance. "It’s a storm, Elena. Everything is flooded. You’re just being dramatic. Take a warm bath. You’ll be fine."

I looked at them—really looked at them. They were monsters, disguised as family. I didn't argue. I didn't cry. I turned around and walked back into the freezing rain. I used the last of my energy to call a ride-share, waiting in the downpour until the headlights cut through the dark.

I gave birth alone in a sterile, white room. When they placed my son, Leo, into my arms, the world narrowed down to the two of us. He was perfect. And looking at his tiny face, I realized I would never allow them to touch his life. I wasn't just fighting for vengeance anymore; I was fighting for his future.
