Chapter 5 - The Masquerade

The Annual Charity Gala was the apex of our social calendar, a night where my family displayed their opulence like a peacock’s tail. This year, it was held at a private estate—a venue chosen by Marcus to flaunt his "recovery" from a recent, mysterious dip in his portfolio.

I arrived wearing a dress that had belonged to my mother, a vintage piece I’d altered to look severe and sharp. I carried Leo in a discreet carrier, an accessory that made me look like the quintessential grieving mother, fragile and soft. Clara moved through the room like a queen, her dress encrusted with diamonds that I knew were purchased with money laundered through the very shell companies I had exposed.

"You look pathetic, Elena," Clara whispered as we passed near the buffet. "Still wearing those rags? It's embarrassing for the family."

"It’s a long night, Clara," I whispered back, my voice steady. "Enjoy the view. It might be the last time you see it this clearly."

The evening progressed according to my script. At 9:00 PM, I triggered the final upload. I had routed the proof of Marcus’s illicit ledger through a compromised server that would bypass his internal firewalls and blast the information directly to the firm’s lead auditors and the local financial press.

I was standing by the champagne fountain when it happened. Marcus’s phone began to vibrate, then ring, then ring again. He stepped away to answer, his face shifting from irritation to sheer, unadulterated panic. He looked across the room, his eyes scanning the crowd until they locked onto me.

I didn't break eye contact. I slowly raised my glass of sparkling water to him, a silent toast. The music continued, the laughter swelled, but I could see the foundation of their world—the floorboards of their prestige—turning to ash beneath their feet.
