Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

The chaos didn't erupt in a shout; it unfolded in a series of frantic, hushed conversations. By 10:00 PM, the gala was effectively over. Guests were whispering, and the board members of Marcus’s firm were huddled in a corner, their faces ghostly pale.

My father cornered me in the hallway, his face purple with rage. "What have you done? Marcus is saying he’s being hacked. He’s saying your name."

I stepped into his space, my voice dropping to a low, icy register. "I haven't done anything but pay attention, Father. Arthur was an honest man. You and Marcus spent years trying to erase him because he wouldn't sign off on your fraud. I didn't hack anything. I just presented the truth that was hiding in the shadows."

"You're a disgrace!" he hissed, raising his hand.

I caught his wrist, my grip surprisingly strong. The months in the cold garage had stripped away my softness, leaving only steel. "If you touch me," I said, my voice vibrating with a quiet, dangerous intensity, "I will ensure that the authorities find the secondary accounts you have in the Cayman Islands. I have the records of your signatures on the deeds you stole from Arthur’s estate. Don’t test me."

He pulled back, his eyes widening in shock. He looked at me as if he were seeing a stranger—a creature he had created in the cold, and who had finally evolved to hunt.

"You think you’ve won?" he stammered.

"I don't think," I replied, smoothing my dress. "I’ve checked the math. And in this equation, you are the remainder. You don't matter anymore."
