Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Ghost

Three weeks passed, and the atmosphere within the Ashford estate transformed completely.
The dark, oppressive quiet that had ruled the stone mansion for three years was replaced by life. Sunflowers were planted in the formal courtyard; the heavy blackout curtains in the living rooms were pulled back to let in the autumn sunlight. Penny was talking in full sentences now, her small voice filling the high-ceilinged halls as she ran through the gardens with Titan bounding at her heels.
Willa had moved into the guest suite on the master floor. She no longer wore a uniform; she wore soft sweaters, dark denim, and simple silver jewelry that Kendrick had quietly instructed his staff to buy for her.
Yet, despite the peace, the dark shadow of the underworld was gathering at the gates.
In the private war room beneath the estate, Kendrick sat before a massive bank of monitors. Maps of New York City were displayed on the screens, marked with red and blue zones representing syndicate territories.
Marcus stood beside him, holding a series of financial reports.
"Barrett Hayes hasn't gone quiet, boss," Marcus reported, his face grim. "He's fled to Montreal. He's formed a secret pact with Mikhail Voronin—the head of the Russian syndicate. They are pooling their remaining forces. They know that if you solidify your hold on the Five Families, the Hayes empire is completely finished."
Kendrick swirled the ice in his glass. "What are they planning?"
"A hit," Marcus said directly. "Not on you. On the annual All-Syndicate Gala this Saturday at the Plaza Hotel. Barrett knows that according to syndicate law, you must present your chosen bride to the elders at the gala to finalize your ascension as Matriarch Commander. If you show up with Willa, he plans to strike."
"He thinks exposing her identity as Thomas Vance's daughter will turn the elders against me," Kendrick said, a cold, dark smile touching his lips.
"It could, boss," Marcus warned carefully. "The elders are old-fashioned. They hate the Voronins. If they see Vance's daughter stepping onto the throne, they might declare war."
The door to the war room opened with a soft click.
Willa stepped down the steel stairs, carrying a tray with fresh coffee. She had learned the layout of the underground bunker over the past week, often bringing food to Kendrick when he worked late into the night.
Titan followed behind her, his heavy paws echoing on the metal steps.
"You shouldn't be down here, Willa," Kendrick said, though his eyes softened the moment he looked at her.
"I heard the voices," Willa said, setting the tray on the glass table. She looked at the screens displaying the maps of Manhattan. "You're talking about the gala on Saturday."
Kendrick stood up, walking around the table until he stood before her. Over the past three weeks, an unspoken, electric tension had grown between them—a deep, magnetic pull that went far beyond gratitude or duty. Kendrick was a man of few words, but the way his eyes tracked her every movement, the way his hand lingered on her waist whenever they walked together, spoke louder than any declaration.
"You don't have to go, Willa," Kendrick told her softly. "I can go alone and crush Barrett in the dark."
"No," Willa said firmly, reaching out to touch his arm. Her fingers rested against the heavy fabric of his suit jacket. "If I stay hidden, people will always say I was a secret, a disgrace, or a coward. You protected me when Barrett tried to destroy me. Let me stand beside you."
Kendrick stared at her, his heart beating with a fierce, possessive warmth he hadn't felt in five long years. He reached up, cupping her cheek in his hand, his thumb gently stroking her soft skin.
"It will be dangerous," he murmured, leaning down so his lips were an inch from hers. "The men in that room are monsters, Willa."
"I'm not afraid of monsters anymore," Willa whispered, looking straight into his grey eyes. "I live with the chief of them."

Kendrick let out a low, breathy laugh and pulled her into him, his lips claiming hers in a deep, powerful kiss that sealed their unspoken vow. Titan let out a happy tail-thump against the steel floor, while Marcus quietly turned his back, a faint smile touching the security chief's face.
The war was coming, but for the first time, Kendrick Ashford wasn't fighting for a memory. He was fighting for a future.
