Chapter 6 - The Traitor's Move

Saturday evening arrived with a biting autumn wind that swept across Fifth Avenue, carrying fallen leaves past the glittering entrance of the Plaza Hotel.

Outside, dozens of black SUVs lined the curb, surrounded by heavily armed guards in suits. Inside the Grand Ballroom, crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light over three hundred members of the high-society underworld. Powerful syndicate bosses, political fixers, and wealthy heiresses moved across the floor, sipping champagne while live violins played softly in the background.

At the head of the room sat the Syndicate Council—five elderly men in dark tuxedos who held the ultimate authority over New York's crime families.

Among the crowd, Julianna Hayes stood in a striking scarlet gown, her face pale, holding a glass of wine. She was surrounded by several young women who had been in the line of fifteen three weeks ago.

"My father says tonight will be Kendrick's downfall," Julianna hissed softly to her friends. "He thinks he can bring that filthy waitress here and insult the council. By midnight, he'll be stripped of his title."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The violins stopped instantly. The chatter died down to a suffocating silence.

Kendrick Ashford walked into the room.

He was magnificent in a dark velvet tuxedo, his posture radiating absolute dominance. But it wasn't Kendrick who made three hundred people hold their breath.

Beside him walked Willa Vance.

She was breathtaking. She wore a custom midnight-blue silk gown that flowed around her like liquid night, exposing her shoulders and the delicate line of her collarbone. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant twist, held by a diamond hairpin that had once belonged to the Ashford family matriarchs. She carried herself not like a waitress, but like an empress walking through her palace.

And trotting beside them, wearing a leather harness with the Ashford crest, was Titan. The massive mastiff walked with heavy, noble steps, his amber eyes scanning the crowd, declaring to everyone in the room that this woman belonged to his master.

"Look at her," someone whispered in the crowd. "She looks like royalty."

"Where did he find her?" another added.

Kendrick led Willa straight toward the raised dais where the five elders sat. He stopped three steps away, bowing his head slightly in formal greeting.

"Elders," Kendrick's deep voice resonated across the silent room. "As required by the charter, I present to you the chosen matriarch of the Ashford family and the mother of my heir. Willa Vance."

Elder Vance—an eighty-year-old man with silver hair and a face lined with deep scars—leaned forward, his sharp eyes scrutinizing Willa. "Willa Vance... That is a name from the dark past, Kendrick. Is she the blood of Thomas Vance?"

"She is," Kendrick said clearly.

A loud murmur erupted through the ballroom. Several bosses reached toward their jackets, sensing trouble.

Before Elder Vance could speak, a harsh, mocking laugh echoed from the balcony above.

"She is not just his blood!" Barrett Hayes yelled, stepping out onto the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom. He was flanked by twelve men armed with submachine guns, all wearing heavy body armor. "She is a spy sent to finish the destruction of the Five Families!"

Panicked screams broke out across the ballroom as guests scrambled toward the exits, only to find the grand doors locked from the outside.

Barrett stood at the iron railing, his broken wrist wrapped in a black sling, his eyes wild with madness. Beside him stepped a tall, heavily scarred man with pale eyes—Mikhail Voronin, the supreme leader of the Russian syndicate.

"The Plaza is surrounded!" Mikhail declared, his accent thick and raspy. "Two hundred of my men are on the streets outside. The police have been paid to stay five miles away. Tonight, the Ashford reign ends, and the Voronin empire takes New York!"
