Chapter 3 - THE AUDIO TRAP

"She's lying! She's completely insane!" Lorraine shrieked, turning to face the crowd of Greenwich aristocrats. "She's an estranged relative! She's suffered a psychotic break! Derek, call the police immediately!"
Derek pulled out his phone with trembling hands, but he wasn't calling the police—he was trying to text his legal team. His hands were shaking so badly he dropped the device twice onto the marble floor.
"I don't need to lie, Lorraine," I said calmly. "I brought proof."
I reached into my bag and pulled out a small, high-powered portable Bluetooth transmitter—a device my grandfather’s driver had given me before I left the car. With two taps on my phone screen, I paired it directly with the estate's integrated Bose outdoor audio network, overriding the smooth jazz playlist that had been piped through sixty hidden speakers across the gardens.
"Wait! Stop her!" Derek yelled, lunging forward.
Before he could reach me, Marcus—the security guard who had followed me up the driveway after reviewing the trust documents—stepped firmly in front of Derek, extending a massive arm to block him. "Sir, step back. This woman is the verified trustee representative."
"You work for me!" Derek roared.
"Actually, sir, the trust pays Vanguard Security," Marcus replied smoothly. "And the trust belongs to Mrs. Monroe."
I hit Play on my phone.
Static crackled across the high-end audio system, followed by the clear, unedited sound of Derek’s voice from my phone call just sixteen hours ago. His voice boomed out of every speaker, reverberating off the white stone walls and soaring over the manicured hedges:
[DEREK’S RECORDED VOICE]: "The project manager may keep us through the weekend, Allison. I cannot send additional money until payroll clears... I'm living in a workers' apartment with four other guys. The signal is terrible..."
The guests looked around in shock. Derek’s face turned completely white.
Then came my voice on the recording:
[ALLISON’S RECORDED VOICE]: "Where are you?"
[DEREK’S RECORDED VOICE]: "In the workers' apartment. I need to disconnect."
Then came the audio artifact—the two seconds before the call dropped. The sound of clinking crystal, background laughter, and Lorraine’s unmistakable voice calling out in the background:
[LORRAINE’S RECORDED VOICE]: "Derek, darling, tell the waiter to bring another bottle of '96 Dom. And make sure that poor girl in Albany doesn't call back during the toasts!"
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Chloe Vance turned to Derek, her eyes wide with horror and disgust. "You told me your ex-wife died in a car accident in Europe! You told my father you were a widowed venture capitalist!"
"Chloe, baby, listen to me—it's a deepfake! She used AI!" Derek pleaded, reaching for her, his hands fluttering in desperation. "You know how crazy she is!"
"Deepfake?" I said, raising my screen. I tapped a second file—the high-definition video capture from my grandfather’s visit yesterday.
The large LED entertainment screen set up near the outdoor bar flickered to life. It displayed the video taken inside my rotting trailer in Albany. The camera zoomed in on the leaking ceiling, the empty refrigerator containing only a half-empty jug of water, and Caleb’s tiny, worn shoes sitting in a puddle on the linoleum floor.
Then, the audio from my grandfather, Dr. Walter Harrington, echoed across the estate:
[WALTER’S RECORDED VOICE]: "Derek has been living inside your property for almost two years... He claimed the hospital network collapsed and stole your access documents while you were in the ICU after Caleb’s birth."
Chloe’s father, Arthur Vance—a prominent developer worth hundreds of millions—stepped forward out of the crowd. His face was thunderous. He looked at Derek, then at the synthetic diamond ring on his daughter’s finger, and finally at the stolen emerald bracelet on her wrist.
"You son of a bitch," Arthur Vance growled, stepping between Derek and his daughter. "You used my family’s name to legitimize yourself in Connecticut society? You're a damn fraud."
"Arthur, please! It's a misunderstanding!" Lorraine cried out, grabbing Arthur’s arm. "We can explain everything! The trust was supposed to be a joint marital asset!"
"It was an irrevocable trust created solely for me and my son," I corrected her, stepping right up to Lorraine. "Which means every dollar you drew from the maintenance fund, every party you hosted here, every bottle of champagne you opened, and every piece of jewelry you stole constitutes federal bank fraud, grand larceny, and embezzlement."

At that exact moment, the heavy iron gates at the bottom of the estate opened once again.
Three vehicles pulled up the long driveway in tight formation: two state police cruisers with their lights flashing quietly, followed by a massive black Lincoln Navigator.
