Chapter 4 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF MONROE

The black Lincoln Navigator came to a halt right beside the main fountain. The driver hopped out and opened the rear door.

My grandfather, Dr. Walter Harrington, stepped out. He was dressed impeccably in his dark navy overcoat, his silver-topped cane striking the marble driveway with a firm, rhythmic thud... thud... thud...

Beside him stepped two men in dark tailored suits carrying thick leather briefcases—Walter’s head legal counsel and the Chief Compliance Officer from First National Trust.

The state troopers exited their cruisers, their hands resting casually near their belts as they surveyed the scene.

"Derek Monroe," my grandfather said, his voice quiet, calm, but carrying the heavy weight of forty years of corporate authority. "And Lorraine Monroe."

Lorraine swallowed hard, backing away until her spine hit the edge of the swan ice sculpture. "Walter... Walter, old friend! Thank God you're here. Your granddaughter has caused a terrible scene! She's delusional, she interrupted our private family event—"

"Quiet, Lorraine," Walter said, not even looking at her. He stopped in front of me, placing a warm, steady hand on my shoulder. He looked down at Caleb, a soft smile breaking through his stern expression. "You did well, Allison."

"They took everything, Grandfather," I said quietly.

"They took nothing," Walter replied coldly, turning his gaze back to Derek. "They merely borrowed it. And now the bill is due."

Walter’s lead attorney, Richard Sterling, stepped forward and opened a heavy manila folder. He pulled out a stack of court orders bearing the red stamp of the Connecticut Superior Court.

"As of 8:00 AM this morning," Sterling announced to the crowd of onlookers, "the Superior Court of Connecticut, upon review of emergency filings regarding Trust #884-B, has issued an immediate temporary restraining order and asset freeze against Derek Monroe and Lorraine Monroe."

Derek gasped. "You can't freeze my accounts! I have payroll to meet! I have investments!"

"Correction, Mr. Monroe," Sterling said with a sharp, humorless smile. "You had accounts. Every bank account bearing your name, every credit line linked to this address, and every shell corporation you created using trust collateral—including Monroe Capital Management—has been frozen by court order. You currently have access to zero dollars."

"What?!" Lorraine screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek that shocked the surrounding guests. "What about my personal accounts? My savings? My jewelry?"

"Your personal accounts were funded entirely through monthly transfer wires drawn directly from the Harrington Family Foundation under the fraudulent pretense of 'caretaker management fees,'" Sterling replied. "That constitutes wire fraud across state lines. The State Police and federal authorities have already been notified."

One of the state troopers stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Derek Monroe? You are being placed under detainment pending questioning regarding grand larceny, filing false legal instruments, and interstate financial fraud. Hands behind your back."

"No! Wait! It wasn't me! It was my mother!" Derek panicked completely. He spun around, pointing a trembling finger directly at Lorraine. "She came up with the plan! She said Allison would never find out if we kept her in Albany! She signed the maintenance invoices! She took the emerald bracelet!"

"Derek! You cowardly worm!" Lorraine shrieked, turning on her own son like a cornered beast. "I did everything for you! I built this life for you while you spent your time lying to young girls!"

The crowd of Greenwich elite watched in absolute horror and fascination as mother and son began screaming at each other, trading insults and exposing every dark secret of their two-year deception in front of fifty smartphones recording every second.

Chloe Vance unclasped the stolen Cartier emerald bracelet from her wrist and threw it onto the marble floor at Derek's feet. "You disgust me," she spat, before turning on her heel and walking toward her father's waiting car.

"Take them away," Walter said softly to the officers.

As the handcuffs clicked around Derek's wrists, he looked back at me, his eyes wide with desperate terror. "Allison! Please! Think of Caleb! I'm his father! You can't do this to me!"

May you like

I looked down at Caleb, who was standing safely beside his great-grandfather, clutching his tiny wooden toy car. Then I looked back at Derek.

"You forgot you were his father the day you diluted his milk," I said smoothly.
