Chapter 3 - The Freezing Out

By midnight, the full extent of Calvin Rhodes’s financial warfare had crippled Derek Ashford’s life with surgical precision.
Sitting in the dim light of his luxury bachelor pad—or rather, the apartment he had secretly leased for Vanessa using joint funds—Derek stared at his phone in sheer horror. Notification after notification flashed across the screen.
Transaction Declined. Account Frozen. Credit Line Suspended. Corporate Audit Initiated.
He tapped his banking app frantically, watching as his personal checking account plummeted to zero. Minutes later, a notification from his employer’s HR department popped up: Pending internal compliance audit regarding corporate expense accounts and conflict-of-interest disclosures.
The trap had snapped shut. Calvin Rhodes hadn't just protected Marissa’s trust; he had initiated a forensic audit of every financial decision Derek had made over the past three years. Any shady venture, any unauthorized bonuses Derek had pulled from subsidiary accounts while working under Marissa’s family umbrella—it was all being dragged into the harsh light of day.
Vanessa paced the living room floor, her hands trembling over her seven-month baby bump, her face pale with mounting panic.
“Derek! What is happening? My credit card just got declined at the pharmacy! How are we going to pay the rent on this place? How are we going to pay the OB-GYN?!”
“Shut up, Vanessa!” Derek roared, slamming his fist against the kitchen counter. The terrifying reality of his situation was finally sinking in. He wasn't just losing a divorce; he was facing bankruptcy, unemployment, and potential criminal charges for corporate financial manipulation.
“Shut up?!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. “You promised me everything! You told me Marissa was weak, that she’d crumble, that we’d take her money and live like kings! And now we have nothing because you couldn't keep your mouth shut in a hospital room!”
“If you hadn't pushed me to tell her—”
“Don't you dare blame me!” Vanessa lunged forward, her nails clawing at his chest before Derek pushed her back onto the sofa.
They stood glaring at each other in the dim apartment—two selfish, greedy cowards who had built their entire future on cruelty, only to watch it incinerate in a matter of hours. They had thought Marissa was alone, broken, and defeated. They had severely underestimated the fire of a mother protecting her dying child.
Meanwhile, forty miles away, Marissa stood in the corner of Holly’s hospital room as a team of specialized medical transport coordinators prepared her daughter for the emergency flight to Boston.
Dr. Patel walked in, holding a freshly signed authorization tablet, looking at Marissa with a renewed sense of awe.
“Mrs. Brooks,” the doctor said quietly. “The financial clearance just came through from Rhodes & Associates. Full funding for the experimental immunotherapy trial in Boston. The private medical jet is prepped on the tarmac at Hanscom Field. We leave in two hours.”

Marissa looked down at Holly, who stirred slightly as the nurse adjusted her blanket. The tiny yellow ducks on the fabric seemed to catch the hospital light like a beacon of hope.
“Let’s go save my daughter,” Marissa said.
