Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

One year later.
The private garden of Marissa’s new home in the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston was bathed in the warm, golden light of a late spring afternoon.
Hydrangeas bloomed in brilliant shades of blue and white along the wrought-iron fence. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass, blooming jasmine, and vanilla cupcakes.
On the emerald lawn, nine-year-old Holly chased a golden retriever puppy around a bubbling stone fountain, her laughter ringing out like bells into the crisp New England air. Her dark curls bounced with every step, and her cheeks were flushed with vibrant, unstoppable life.
Marissa sat on the shaded veranda, wearing a breezy white summer dress, sipping a cup of herbal tea.
Calvin Rhodes walked out onto the veranda, holding a leather-bound portfolio under his arm and smiling warmly as he watched Holly play.
“The final corporate restructuring is complete, Marissa,” Calvin said, setting the portfolio down on the iron table. “All assets are securely transferred, the foundation is fully funded, and your new holdings in Boston are performing exceptionally well.”
Marissa smiled, looking up at the older man who had been like a father to her through her darkest hours. “Thank you, Calvin. For everything. I don't know where we would be without you.”
“You would have found a way, Marissa,” Calvin said softly. “You always were your mother’s daughter. Resilient, fierce, and unbreakable.”
Across the lawn, Holly stopped running, spotted her mother, and sprinted over as fast as her legs could carry her, clutching Captain Bun in one hand.
“Mommy! Look what the puppy found!” Holly cheered, holding up a shiny silver pebble she had discovered near the rosebushes.
Marissa pulled her daughter onto her lap, wrapping her arms around her tightly, breathing in the sweet scent of shampoo and sunshine.
“It’s a magic stone, sweetie,” Marissa whispered, kissing the top of Holly’s head. “It means we can wish for anything we want.”
“I already wished for it,” Holly said seriously, looking up with bright, clear eyes.
“And what was that?”
“That we stay right here forever, just you and me.”

Marissa smiled, looking out past the garden gate toward the bright, endless horizon where the sun was beginning to set in a brilliant blaze of gold and rose.
The storm had passed. The monsters had fallen. And their bright, beautiful new dawn was finally here to stay, shining forever without a single shadow left behind.
