Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn

Derek Ashford sat across from a public defender in a small, windowless consultation room at the Fulton County Courthouse. The sharp smell of floor wax and stale coffee hung heavy in the air.

He hadn't shaved in a week. His bespoke Tom Ford suit was wrinkled, his designer shoes scuffed.

“Mr. Ashford, let’s be entirely frank,” the public defender said, flipping through a thick stack of legal documents with a weary sigh. “You are facing four counts of felony wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and misappropriation of subsidiary funds. Rhodes & Associates didn't just freeze your accounts—they handed federal prosecutors a forensic audit trail that spans three years and multiple shell companies.”

“I’m an executive! I have rights!” Derek stammered, his voice cracking with panic. “Can’t we negotiate a settlement? Can’t we talk to Marissa?”

“Marissa Brooks filed for an emergency default divorce citing abandonment, financial betrayal, and moral turpitude,” the lawyer replied flatly. “She was granted sole custody, absolute forfeiture of all marital assets, and a permanent restraining order. Furthermore, your former employer has joined the civil suit to recover the three hundred thousand dollars you siphoned into personal accounts.”

Derek slumped back in his chair, his hands covering his face as cold sweat beaded on his forehead.

Things were no better at the luxury apartment.

Vanessa sat on the bare mattress—since most of their rented furniture had been repossessed by creditors—staring at the empty kitchen. There was no food in the fridge. No money in the bank. And Derek had spent the last three days screaming at her, blaming her for every catastrophic decision that had brought them to ruin.

“I’m leaving, Derek,” Vanessa said quietly as Derek walked through the apartment door, looking like a ghost.

Derek stopped, staring at her suitcase near the door. “Leaving? Where the hell are you going? You’re seven months pregnant with my child!”

“Back to our parents’ basement,” Vanessa snapped, tears of humiliation spilling over her lashes. “Where I don't have to listen to you whine about how ruined you are. You lied to me, Derek. You told me you were wealthy. You told me Marissa’s money was yours for the taking. You’re a pathetic, broke fraud.”

“You helped me!” Derek screamed, grabbing her arm. “You wanted the money just as badly as I did!”

“Get your hands off me!” Vanessa shoved him away with surprising strength, grabbed her bags, and slammed the front door behind her.

Derek stood alone in the empty, silent apartment. He had traded a loyal wife, a brilliant career, and a family that loved him for a fleeting affair and a mountain of greed. Now, he had nothing.
