Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanessa Clark

Across town in a cramped, fluorescent-lit motel room off Interstate 90, Vanessa Clark stared blankly at the blank television screen.
Her designer suit was rumpled. Her expensive handbag sat on the linoleum floor, empty save for a tube of lipstick and thirty-four dollars in crumpled bills. Her phone had buzzed continuously for three hours straight until the battery died—bank alerts, credit card rejections, apartment lease termination notices, and an eviction summons served by a bailiff who wouldn't even look her in the eye.
She had tried to call her boss at Bellamy & Hart, only to be told by a cold corporate recording that her employee ID had been revoked for gross misconduct. She had tried to call her lawyer, only to be informed that her retainer had mysteriously bounced and her legal counsel was no longer available.
In less than twenty-four hours, Vanessa’s entire carefully constructed world of luxury, status, and smug superiority had been utterly, systematically dismantled.
There was no trial. There was no warning. There was only an invisible hand that had reached into her life and erased her existence as if she were nothing more than a pencil mark on a cheap notepad.

She buried her face in her hands, shaking with a mixture of helpless rage and cold, clawing terror.
She had made one mistake. She had looked at an elderly woman in a gray coat, decided she didn't belong, and allowed her ego to dictate her actions. And somewhere in the dark machinery of Chicago, that mistake had triggered an avalanche that buried her alive.
