Chapter 9 - The Siege of the North Side

Within twenty-four hours, the underworld of Chicago experienced a reckoning that would be whispered about in back rooms and dockside bars for decades.

Dante Moretti did not merely retaliate; he eradicated the faction responsible down to its last shell company, bank account, and safehouse. By Friday morning, the rival syndicate’s leadership had vanished, their assets absorbed into the Moretti portfolio, and their territory locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary.

At Brooks and Bloom, a crew of contractors had already repaired the storefront, installing bulletproof laminated glass and reinforced steel window frames before dawn.

Amelia sat in the private living quarters above the shop, a cold compress held lightly against her bruised jaw.

The door opened softly, and Dante stepped in. He had changed into a clean black shirt, but the dark shadows beneath his eyes spoke of a man who had not slept in thirty-six hours. He walked over, kneeling beside her chair just as he had weeks ago, his gaze heavy with lingering guilt.

“The shop is secure,” Dante said quietly. “Reinforced glass, private armed patrol stationed across the street twenty-four hours a day. No one will ever come near you again.”

Amelia lowered the compress and looked at him. “You’re turning my flower shop into a fortress, Dante.”

“I’m keeping you alive,” he corrected softly, his hand rising to gently trace the line of her cheek. “When I saw that blood on your face yesterday... I thought I had failed. I thought that by bringing you into my orbit, I had put a target on your back.”

“You didn't put a target on my back,” Amelia said, placing her small hand over his large, calloused one. “Life did. The world did. But you... you are the only one who stepped up to break the people who tried to crush me.”

Dante looked into her eyes, seeing the fierce, unyielding spirit that had matched his own from the very first moment they met. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against hers, his breath warm against her skin.

“My mother was right about you,” he whispered. “You are the strongest person I have ever known.”

“Your mother has very good taste,” Amelia murmured with a soft, tired smile.

Dante’s lips met hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and filled with a profound, aching devotion—a promise that no matter what darkness surrounded them, they would face it together.
